The road we follow is the chief artery Of the State of Pennsylvania, the channel through which flows the main current of its vast activity. But it is much more than a great local highway. It is also one Of the chief lines by which the East and the West join hands across the conti nent. The history Of this railroad in its first beginnings, as we shall trace them later on, is a curious record not only Of local enterprise but of early experiments in railroading as well. It is but fifty years since those experiments were begun, yet the first road over the Alleghenies has been superseded and done away with. It has, indeed, passed not only out Of use but almost out of mind. How many of the thousand daily passengers over the present track know that there was another steam-route - yes, .
