The U.S supported South Vietnam in financial ways as well as offered their military support. Their soldiers were trained and implemented many tactics to battle, especially against the guerilla techniques of the Vietnamese. William Pitsenbarger, William Maud Bryant and Jimmie. E. Howard were some of those brave militants who participated in the series of attacks. Pits dedicated his life to the rescue of the troops and fought back as much as possible in the Xa Cam My incident on April 11, 1966. While Jimmie.E. Howard participated in the intense attack at Chu Lai on June 13, 1966 and Bryant was shot by the rocket from the adversary in 1969. All of these men were honored for their dedication and sacrifice. Additionally, Bryant Hall was dedicated to his bravery. When his battalion ran out of ammunition, Jimmie Howard gave one of the most famous orders in military history: to hurl stones at the enemy. They deceived the adversaries as they believed that they were explosives. The sacrifice made by Pits on his off day and volunteered to rescue the militants also made the rest of the survivors owe towards him. The entire nation bowed before him for that. Thus, these brave warriors adorned military history.

Young men 18 years old and men up to 40 years old were being drafted into the military service. I was tall for my age at 13. I went to the draft board and told them I was 18, they believed me and I was drafted into the army. After 1 year of military duty, I was honorably discharged after returning home. I was inducted into the American Legion as the nation's youngest legionnaire. At the age of 17 and with the permission of my mother, I volunteered to go back into the army and I was sent to serve in Berlin in 1947. At this time in Berlin, the Russians had set up a blockade around West Berlin, trapping American, French and British Armies. When in Berlin, I was given the opportunity to guard some of the top Nazis at Spandau Prison. After my duty in Germany I served in Korea on the front line during the war. Also served in the Vietnam War and was wounded in Vietnam. After 22 years of Army service I retired.

The men and women who served in World War II are routinely praised as heroes; the “Greatest Generation,” after all, triumphed over fascism and successfully reentered postwar society. Veterans of the Vietnam War, on the other hand, occupy a different thread in the postwar narrative, sometimes as a threat to society but usually as victims of it; these vets returned home to a combination of disdain, fear, and prolonged suffering. And until very recently, both the public and historians have largely overlooked veterans of the Korean War altogether; the hit television show M*A*S*H was set in Korea but was more about Vietnam. Long Journeys Home explores the veteran experience of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. It examines and dissects the various myths that have grown up around each of these wars. Author Michael D. Gambone compares and contrasts the basic elements of each narrative, including the factors that influenced the decision to enlist, the impact of combat on life after the war, the struggles of postwar economic adjustment, and participation in (or withdrawal from) social and political activism.
