Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest of the Green Mountain State Forests provide wood and other forest products, watershed protection, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, a setting for recreation, and much more. They have played a major role in the history and culture of Vermont. The early settlers found nearly all of the State covered by forests. The initial clearing of these woodlands was slow as most colonists established small subsistence farms. Forest clearing became widespread around 1800 as Vermont's farmers began supplying food and wool to a rapidly growing nation. The thousands of small farms created a strong agriculture - based economy. The city of Burlington, Vermont, became a major producer of timber during this time. By 1880, only about a third of Vermont remained forested. As early as 1845, George Perkins Marsh warned Vermont farmers about the damage that results from clearing forests. Eventually, those who once assumed that the State's forest resource was unlimited were faced with timber shortages. Soil erosion from farm land increased and silt now muddied creeks that once ran clear. And because of the rapid runoff of storm water, springs that previously flowed year round were dry during the summer. As Vermont's forests diminished, so did once abundant populations of important species of wildlife, for example, the beaver, black bear, white - tailed deer, wild turkey, and wolf. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest It is a glimpse of the human heart, seen like the blue sea off soundings (which has puzzled, and worse, our landsmen critics) with an ugly and awful fact of human nature ever and anon surging up to the surface, like a monster of the deep, and showing its dark form for a moment in the leaping sun-light, then disappearing to seek its native depths. It makes you dizzy the unsteady motion, the sun dancing in the firmament, the masts describing segments of cir cles in the sky, the good ship heeled over, and almost laid on her beam ends, under the press of her cloud-like canvass, and threatening every moment to take in a flood over her bows, and the sight of these sea monsters sporting in the brine? Yet out of these Visions and per ceptions of nature, (our own abysmal nature in a turmoil, ) and the struggle to maintain the balance of the soul, spring Virtues and a purity of conscience of which the world has but a faint idea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Green Mountain Boy Born and Bred He voted Yes on the bill establishing parcel post, the passage of which reduced the cost of living for rich and poor alike by lowering the transportation charges on all kinds of products. He opposed Canadian reciprocity and spoke against it in the Senate, believing it would be disastrous to the agricultural interests of Vermont. He voted Yes on the bill to establish a bureau for the welfare of children and women laborers, a measure to make life worth living for every juvenile and woman wage earner. He voted Yes for the bill permitting the President to put on the free list such articles as were controlled by monopolies, thereby antagonizing the powerful trusts and their army of pair lobbyists at the national capital. He strongly supported the Child Labor bill, the latest measure for elevating the conditions of toiling childhood. Vermont d'airymen always found him voting right in regard to oleomargarine. He strenuously opposed all efforts to allow the oleomargarine dealer to color his product so as to resemble butter, which has been the chief contention of the Vermont farmer. He has had a potential influence in the committee on Indian Affairs and has persistently fought from the first the hundreds of bills which if passed would have unjustly deprived the red man of his property. The Indians regard him as their true friend. He voted No on the motion to strike out that portion of the Conservation bill that gave the Government the right to conserve the resources of the Connecticut river. This was a deliberate attempt on the part of certain powerful interests to cripple the conservation system. Senator Page believed in saving the God-given resources of New England for the people of that prosperous section and their children's children. He voted for the Dillingham Immigration bill, a far-reach ing measure that offered the proper solution of one of the most complex questions now before Congress and the nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of Vermont A resurvey of the timber resources in Vermont was made in 1965 and 1966 by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, approximately 18 years after the initial forest survey. In this resurvey, as in the initial survey, the Northeastern Station received cooperation from the Vermont Department of Forests and Parks. The Department purchased the aerial photographs of the entire state that were used for the re survey and gathered information on the output of timber products. State field crews remeasured initial forest survey plots and established new plots on all State forest land. Personnel of the Green Mountain National Forest car ried out the part of the survey on National forest land. This report summarizes the timber-resource situation and the changes that have taken place since the initial sur vey. Trends in the supply of timber for forest-based indus tries are pointed out and projections of future timber supply are made. In this resurvey, a portion of the initial ground plots was remeasured to provide estimates of net annual timber growth and estimates of land-use change and to update the initial forest inventory volume. New ground plots were established for an independent second estimate. These two sets of estimates were weighted and combined to give the current estimates of forest area and timber volume. Sampling errors, which indicate reliability, are shown for most of the totals of the breakdowns of the new esti mates. Users of these resource data are cautioned to read carefully the definitions of terms and the section pertain ing to the reliability of the estimates in the appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches: Our Lands and People The region since known as the State of Vermont, was originally a forest wilderness, traversed by many streams of water, large and small, fed not only by the usual water-shed, but by copious living springs bubbling from every hillside; numerous beautiful valleys, extensive uplands, independent hills, high and low; and a range of mountains ex tending northerly and southerly its entire length. The forests were of a dense and intermingled growth of beech, birch, maple, elm, pine, fir, spruce, hemlock, cedar, etc., among which the evergreens largely pre dominated, especially upon the mountain slopes, giv ing them the name of the Green Mountains. Hence 1t came to be called the Green Mountain State. Its state name is derived from the two latin words verde, green, and mons, mountain, hence Vermont. As can easily be imagined, its landscape scenery was wild, unique and beautifully picturesque. Its beauty was still more enhanced in after years when it came to be settled, dotted all over with cultivated fields and orchards, farm-houses and barns, and villages with their church spires pointing heavenward.
