Book excerpt: The idea of writing a book came to me after an evening of preparing a meal for some friends. I enjoy cooking for others. It is relaxing and creative, and I find that, most of the time, everyone always wants Italian food. Halfway through dinner, I was already getting requests for another sumptuous event. A thought came to me to try to recreate the meal and write down the recipe. We do not usually cook with recipes in my family so that was a novel idea. After that, when cooking, if a dish was exceptionally tasty and looked pretty, I would try to recreate it. It was at that time that I finally realized I had a lot to say about food. I paid such special attention in preparing delicious as well as nutritious foods in not only Italian dishes but also my individual taste that I had to share them. Between learning at a young age about how food was grown, harvested, and prepared, combined with my degree in holistic nutrition, I realized the amount of information in my head was overpowering. So I decided to write The Farmers Daughters Guide to Nutritious and Delicious Eating. I hope you enjoy my tribute to my family and my very fortunate life, including the Martino family photos. Consider this my contribution to your journey for good, healthy, and fun eating!

Book excerpt: (This is the shorter 124 page "Home/Family Edition" which excludes lesson plans). This book provides families, teachers and community members with the basic tools and inspiration to connect children with nature and show them how to grow, prepare and eat healthy foods. Readers will find step-by-step lesson plans/curricula, hundreds of activity ideas, plant guides and nutritionist-approved, Hawai'i-based recipes. The book is divided into two main sections: Meet the Plants and Recipes. The Meet the Plants section is used to teach keiki about specific fruits, vegetables and herbs (includes 19 plants or plant families). Each page features a specific plant or plant family with a labeled photograph. These pages will increase readers knowledge about plants and give you ideas about how to use them in the classroom, kitchen and garden. The book includes 37 "'Ai Pono Recipes". These recipes are for adults to make with children, or children to make on their own. Make these recipes for taste tests, classroom/home cooking, snacks and meals. They are all nourishing foods that feature Hawai'i grown and raised ingredients. The book encourages adults to engage children in the entire cooking process: learning about the ingredients, gardening, harvesting, washing, cooking, eating and cleaning. These recipes are designed to keep children, families and teachers healthy, so readers are encouraged to make and eat these recipes often. This book is beautiful and features real foods and plants from Hawai'i.

Book excerpt: A wickedly funny, full-color, illustrated sendup of the trendy lifestyle publication GOOP. What is Glop? Glop is a business and a website. But Glop is also a feeling. It’s about picking the right expensive organic eye cream that will make you fit seamlessly into the top tiers of high society and sits next to Bono at a 42-course seitan tasting dinner held in a sex dungeon deep beneath the North Pole. Glop is about being conscious to the tiny details of our lives—what to eat, where to buy your cashmere yoga pants, which juice cleanse will remove the most mercury toxins from both your body and your cashmere yoga pants. Glop is about you. In this scathingly humorous parody, Gabrielle Moss skewers the vanity, elitism, and silliness of the lifestyle website everyone loves to hate. Here are favorite recipes, detoxes, activities, cleanses, beauty tips, juice cleanses, vacation destinations, and a selection of hand creams that will open your third eye—plus lots of celebrity namedropping and more. Glop includes everything from the silly to sublime—make-at-home stem cell moisturizing repair masques, weekend colonics, restorative yoga poses (for when Sting is mad at you about that thing you did), and even the freshest bones for your bone broth. Here, too, are G’s essential tips on parenthood, relationships, work and finances, entertaining, food (well, maybe not food), spirituality, beauty, fashion, home, gifts, kids, and more. Nothing in Glop is sacred—except for a few Indian cows you can’t afford.

Book excerpt: Featuring down-to-earth advice on finding, buying, growing, and preparing great food from local sources, this important resource shows readers how to bring what's on their plates in line with what's in their hearts. For anyone concerned about animal welfare, economic fair play, family cohesion, community wellbeing, or the impact of human activity on the environment, the book is a compendium of practical know-how, showcasing another whole food system that has been quietly producing delicious foods in ways that don't wreck any ecosystems but actually improve some of them. These are the foods lovingly produced by small-scale farmers and family-run cottage businesses, not corporations. They're made in small quantities close to the community by people who cherish their land and work hard to keep it healthy. Millions more Americans would love to eat this bounty, but many worry that eating fresh, local food is too difficult or expensive. Here, readers will discover how to: buy a tomato that actually tastes like a tomato instead of insipid mush; navigate CSAs, farmer's markets, buyer's clubs, co-ops, and more; fit cooking into a jam-packed modern lifestyle; get kids to eat their vegetables--and love them; and do it all for even less than they're paying now for industrial food. The results will help them derive more pleasure from meals, enjoy better health, experience a deeper connection with nature, nurture a robust local economy, and support a fairer world--simply by sitting down to a deliberately chosen, lovingly prepared meal.
