Book excerpt: Why did the West become so rich? Why is inequality rising? How ‘free’ should markets be? And what does sex have to do with it? In this passionate and skilfully argued book, leading feminist Victoria Bateman shows how we can only understand the burning economic issues of our time if we put sex and gender – ‘the sex factor’ – at the heart of the picture. Spanning the globe and drawing on thousands of years of history, Bateman tells a bold story about how the status and freedom of women are central to our prosperity. Genuine female empowerment requires us not only to recognize the liberating potential of markets and smart government policies but also to challenge the double-standard of many modern feminists when they celebrate the brain while denigrating the body. This iconoclastic book is a devastating exposé of what we have lost from ignoring ‘the sex factor’ and of how reversing this neglect can drive the smart economic policies we need today.

Book excerpt: Lew Yablonsky's story is about a youth who was involved in various delinquent activities as a teenager, and later in life, after serving in the Navy, went through a dramatic change to become a noted Professor of Criminology. His favorite commentary about his life change on various national TV programs and in news media about his professional life was: "In my early years some of my best friends were criminal sociopaths, and I learned more about crime from them than I learned from acquiring my Ph.D. at NYU." His autobiography details his early years, and how his personal life entwines with the 20 books he has researched and written about crime, drug addiction, and other social issues. The following quote from a review of his first book "The Violent Gang" in the Los Angeles Times describes his writing style "...a powerful and incisive writing in the field of sociology...an important and imensely useful work.

Book excerpt: The expression of many bacterial genes adapts itself in an almost in stantaneous and reversible way to specific environmental changes. More specifically, the concentration of a number of metabolites, a function of the amounts of enzymes involved in their synthesis or degradation, in turn retroacts on the rate of synthesis of these enzymes. The genetic bases for this regulation were established by JACOB and MONOD (1961). These authors also showed how the known elements of these regulatory mechanisms could be connected into a wide variety of circuits endowed with any desired degree of stability, in order to account for essentially irreversible processes like differentiation (MONOD and JACOB, 1961). The general principles used by JACOB and MONOD in their study of negative regulation were extended to positive regulation by ENGLESBERG et al. (1965). An independent approach permitted the discovery of positive controls in temperate bacteriophages (see below, III). Each control operation is mediated by a pair of complementary genetic elements (hereafter called "control cell"): a control gene which produces a l control (or regulator) protein and a control site which is the target for the regulator protein. Negative control means that the control protein (repressor) prevents gene expression. One deals with positive control when the control protein (activator) is necessary for this expression. It has become apparent that, as initially postulated by JACOB and MONOD, control of gene expression operates, at least to a large extent, at the transcriptional level.

The use of the term "sex therapy" for most clinicians brings several well-known therapists to mind and is associated with the treatment of a fairly limited number of sexual problems. The view of sex therapy as a profession has had both positive and negative consequences. The editor’s state that the purpose in writing and editing this book was to build on the work of individually oriented sex therapy by adding the systems perspective. This book, then, represents an attempt at the integration of sex and marital or systems therapy.
