Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Naval Armament The notes on which these essays are based were collected in the course of two commissions spent under the lee of the Admiralty library, close to the Royal United Service Institution, and in touch with the Reading Room of the British Museum and other public sources of information. The lack of a hook describing in popular language the materialistic side of naval history is, I think, generally admitted. Historians as a rule have devoted small space to consideration of material; in particular, the story of the revolutionary changes in naval material which took place during the nineteenth century has never been placed before the public in convenient form. In the attempt to supply such a description I have taken the liberty, as an engineer, of treating of naval material as a whole; tracing, as well as my technical knowledge permits, the progress of all the three principal elements - ship, gun, engine - and their interdependence. The result, faulty and incomplete as it is, may nevertheless he of considerable service, it is hoped, in clarifying the work of the historians and bridging the gap which divides the classic histories from our modern text-books. I have considered our modern navy to begin with the "Admiral" class of battleship, about the year 1880. My respectful thanks are due to the heads of three Admiralty departments: Captain R. H. Crooke, C.B., lately Director of Naval Ordnance; Engineer Vice-Admiral Sir George Goodwin, K.C.B., LL.D., Engineer-in-Chief of the Fleet; and Sir Eustace T. D'Eyncourt, K.C.B., Director of Naval Construction; for their unofficial approval. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Navy It is now four years since the Memorandum was printed by order of the Bureau of Ordnance, for the use of the officers of the Navy, in order to explain the System of Boat Armament then recently adopted. The number printed has been nearly exhausted, and other occupation has alone prevented me from preparing a second edition, some time since, with such corrections and additions as the tests of service or farther investigation should have rendered proper. It is gratifying to me that, on the whole, the plan and its details have proved efficient, and have encountered fewer difficulties than usually attend the first practical initiation of a new project. And that its general utility has been recognized in several instances, where light artillery has been needed in boats or in landing detachments of seamen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Battles of the World: Great and Decisive Contests on the Sea; Causes and Results of Ocean Victories and Defeats, Marine Warfare and Armament in All Ages The Ancients were full of horror of the mysterious Great Sea, which they deified; believing that man no longer belonged to himself when once embarked, but was liable to be sacrificed at any time to the anger of the Great Sea god; in which case no exertions of his own could be of any avail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Gunnery: A Description and History of the Fighting Equipment of a Man-of-War This work has been written, not for experts, but to give the general public some information on the all-important subject of the armament of our ships of war, which they may not be in a position to obtain conveniently for themselves. There is much that is not original in the book, as it is, from its very nature, a compilation in the main from the standard works and text-books on gunnery, which are not as a rule available for use by the man in the street. My aim has been, therefore, to trace the history of naval gunnery from the date when guns are first mentioned as having been used on board ships down to our own time, and to put into a readable form enough of the heavy matter contained in the standard text-books to give non-professional readers a fair insight into the causes which have brought us from the smooth-bore muzzle-loading 68-pounder, the heaviest gun in existence at the time of the Russian War, to the breech-loading 111-ton guns of the Sans Pareil and Benbow, and from the smooth-bore 32-pounder of the same period to the 6-inch quick-firing gun of to-day; and also to give some idea of how the guns on board men-of-war are now constructed, mounted and worked, and how complex but formidable a fighting machine is the battleship of the present day, when compared to the wooden ships of the line and frigates of only thirty years ago.
