Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Liberty The study of political theories seems to be attracting considerable attention at present, a number of able writers, such as Dunning, Willoughby, Merriam. Osgood, and others having recently made contributions to this branch of research. Political theories are not only of theoretical interest, but have at times greatly influenced historical development. This is true in marked degree of those ideas whose genesis is traced in the following pages. They have been put forward repeatedly as a protest against oppression and arbitrary power. Their greatest influence, however, has made itself felt since the American Revolution. They have in large measure contributed to make our American political institutions what they are to-day. They are often spoken of as American principles. Though they did not originate in this country, they were here for the first time incorporated in the political programme of a great nation, and have been more completely realized here than in any other country. The following dissertation was begun at the suggestion of Professor Max Lenz of the University of Berlin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Liberty, Vol. 1 I Purpose in this work to trace the history of liberty throughout is called the modern use. Liberty throughout what is called the modern age. Liberty in the general sense I take to be the free development of man, subject of course to the limits of such development inseparable from human life. Absolute liberty is the prerogative of no mortal. Man is subject to the conditions of his being. He derives his existence from another. He is dependent on others as well as himself for its maintenance. Its span is short and uncertain at the best. Looking at human life merely from the material standpoint, man's insufficiency, dependence are patent enough. They are equally patent from the spiritual point of view. The human spirit is instinctively conscious of subjection to an intelligence infinitely superior to it, and this feeling of subjection is expressed in one form or another in its religious beliefs and usages. Again, as a political and social unit, the individual is conscious of restraints as well as rights. In whatever relation we regard him - material, moral, political, social - limitation, subjection is the law of his life. So much granted as a matter of course, it is nevertheless true that liberty, within certain limits, is also a law of human life. The human will is free, to a certain extent at least, as is evidenced by our consciousness of the fact, and exemplified in countless acts of volition. A great part of my experience is a matter of my own volition, for which I must hold myself, as well as circumstances, responsible. Man is not a mere machine driven by the motor force of necessity. He has, to a certain extent, his destiny in his own hands. If it were not so, to speak of liberty, far less to attempt to write a history of it, would be an utter delusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Liberty The necessity of teaching, not only to young Americans but to all prospective Americans, the meaning and mis sion of political liberty has but lately found expression in the movement known as Americanization. What is liberty as exemplified in American institutions? Where and how did it originate? Through what struggles and triumphs has it advanced? What peoples have always been its defenders, and how have its influence and bless ings been finally extended to include all nations of the earth? It is upon a knowledge of the facts implied in such questions as these that young American Citizens, whether native or foreign-born, are to become truly Americanized. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published for the first time in 1904, The Evolution of Modern Liberty was originally intended to be a comparison study of the American and French bills of rights. However, Scherger expanded his volume into much more—a timeless look at the modern idea of liberty and the steps taken to get there. A fragment of history in and of itself, this classic of early twentieth-century historical study is a must-have for the collection of any history or political buff. Coming up on its 110th year of publication, this volume is a fascinating insight on the notion of liberty, published during a time when it was still unfolding. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
