Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this follow up to his best-selling book Don't Shoot the Decoys, author Doug Larsen offers more humorous observations on the sport of waterfowling. The book begins with a hilarious "Open Letter to the Duck Gods," in which Larsen wonders aloud about what he has done to deserve the wrath of the duck hunting deities, which have obviously conspired against him to ruin his hunting season, his physical and mental health, and his family life. "Three weeks into the season," he writes, "with only two weeks left to go. Everything seems to be going against me, and I wouldn't know a limit of ducks if I tripped over one." From there Larsen lets his duck hunting fancy take flights that are sure to tickle the funny bones of waterfowlers everywhere. These include ruminations on why there aren't any duck hunting movies (in the story "Black Duck Down"), a duck hunt with two sharp-shooting and keen-witted little old ladies in the Louisiana bayou (in "A Duck for Gumbo"), a chapter devoted to, of all things, "Coot Tactics," and seventeen other new and original stories of "waterfowling obsession." Indeed, what was said when Larsen published his first book is even more apt with the publication of his second: "If Gordon MacQuarrie is the voice of the old duck hunters, then Doug Larsen is the voice of the new."

Book excerpt: It Seems to Me was created to make the Bible more accessible to the average reader. It offers a sensible approach to the whole Bible, with the primary goal of helping people find modern paths through the ancient book. It focuses on such themes as the ancient context of the Bible, how language works, biblical images, the nature and limitations of theology, and changing understandings of reality in the search for those paths. The primary mission of the Bible teacher is to help people feel at home in the Bible. Most people know little bits and pieces of the Bible and can quote a few verses from various passages, but often there is little understanding of the central concerns and the overarching story of the Bible. This little book is intended to help Christians move toward that understanding and discover their identity and mission as the people of God.

Book excerpt: When Mills Taylor, a talented New York advertising and public relations agent, accepts a job as the director of an educational scholarship foundation in Alston Station, a town near Charleston, South Carolina, she never imagines that her new position will launch a year of living dangerously. Mills agrees to help after the foundation’s former director, Cooper Heath, suffers a personal tragedy. His wife is missing and some people think he made her disappear. The Cast Net chronicles the year when Mills plunges into a socially unfamiliar world of Southern money and power in the late 1980s. As she helps Cooper cope and seek the truth behind his wife’s disappearance, she learns the deeper meaning of “the cast net” and why it’s been embraced by generations of Low Country residents. The Cast Net is a compelling and engaging novel about roots, a sense of community, trust, betrayal, redemption, and especially—love.

Book excerpt: In the context of rising consumerism and globalization, books on consumption are numerous. These tend to be firmly rooted in particular disciplines, however sociology, anthropology, business or cultural studies and as a result often present a blinkered view. Charged with the mission of unravelling what consumption means and how it operates, the worlds leading experts were flown to a secluded location in Sweden to 'battle it out'. This pioneering book represents the outcome. Ranging from the 'little black dress' to on-line communities, Elusive Consumption challenges our very understanding of consumerism. How successful is the advertising world in manipulating our buying patterns? Does the global marketplace promote cultural homogeneity or heterogeneity? Is the West really more of a 'consumerist civilization' than other countries? Does the advertising of certain products influence a voters choice of political party? How are products associated and marketed to different genders? These controversial topics and many more are discussed. Covering virtually every aspect of the word 'consumerism', Elusive Consumption provides a state-of-the-art view of the highly commercialized society we inhabit today. Some might have it that consumers are unwitting pawns, completely lacking in agency. Others might argue that consumer choices are empowering and subtly shape production. Richard Wilk, Colin Campbell, John F. Sherry, Richard Elliott, Russell Belk, and Daniel Miller who offers the most persuasive argument in this battle royal?
