Book excerpt: "Amphitryon", written in 1807, is an adaptation of a classical comedy by the Roman author Plautus. It is the story of an Theban general named Amphitryon and his misadventures with his betrothed, who sets a task for him before marrying him."The Broken Jug", written in 1806, is a comedy about a judge who breaks a jug, and coerces a country girl to keep his secret, which she does-- up to a point. "The Prince of Homburg", written in 1809-10, is a comedy-drama about a successful young officer, who is seen sleepwalking with a laurel wreath on his head. His commander, the Great Elector, is offended by this and later threatens the prince with death for supposedly disobeying an order. At first the prince begs for his life, then determines to go with dignity... only to find that perhaps life is a dream, after all.

Book excerpt: An army of Amazons sets out to conquer Greek heroes for the purpose of stocking their women's state with new female offspring. They blast into the midst of the Trojan War, confusing Greeks and Trojans alike and for a moment forcing those enemies into a terrified alliance. When Achilles, the pride and mainstay of the Greeks, and Penthesilea (Pen-te-sil-lay-uh), queen of the Amazons, meet, a chase begins, The like of which not even the wildest storms Set loose to thunder across the plain of heaven Have yet presented to the astonished world, and it is the queen who is hunting Achilles, to the uncomprehending horror of the Greeks. Thus begins a tragedy of love in a world governed by the rules of war, on which "the gods look down but from afar." For the first time, in this splendidly illustrated book, an English translation recreates the audaity, romance, and poetry of one of the strangest and most beautiful works of Western literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes the trial so appealing as dramatic form? Why do we watch? Is it simply the quest for truth and justice? Or is it much more than that? From the time of Sophocles, the court has fascinated audiences and dramatists alike. Kleist is no exception, as each of his dramas and many of his stories and anecdotes contain a trial of some sort from its most primitive form of hand-to-hand combat in the duel to more conventional legal proceedings in secular, military and ecclesiastical courts. At trial, we desire, whether consciously or unconsciously, to have our own system of beliefs and behaviours affirmed rather than to attempt to achieve justice: self-interest prevails at the expense of truth and equity. The focus of this book is the tension between the restoration of dikê, the balance of natural order, and the pursuit of truth and justice as impetus behind the trial. With recourse to the concept of legal instrumentalism, which underscores this preference for order over justice in both the law and literature, the author examines Kleist's dramas to determine the extent to which those individuals in positions of power are able to manipulate the proceedings, seeking not justice and truth, but rather the validation of their own particular version of order. The trial, a tool generally thought to be designed to discover truth and to mete out justice, is used instead, in the hands of the powerful, as an instrument of control and degradation.
