Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholic ecclesiology stands at the threshold of a new moment in the reception of the Second Vatican Council. The election of Pope Francis—coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the council—has inspired a fresh consideration of its teaching in such diverse areas as ecumenism, inculturation, missiology, and ministry. The chapters in this volume have their origin in a special symposium that called together over forty of the leading Catholic scholars from throughout North America in order to discuss the future of theological reflection on the church. The nine essays in this volume guided that conversation and offer an entry into some of the most pressing issues in ecclesiology today.

This is how it began. As a child, this was my introduction to the church, my place in the church, and the purpose of the church in the world around us. The things we have experience in our journey in understanding God's heart for us are never covered within the concept of those four hand movements because God loves to operate out from behind closed doors. In fact, we have had it all wrong for a very long time. We act out the little children's rhyme and when we "Open the doors to see all of the people" part, we are looking within the walls as if the most important thing about the purpose of the church is what happens within. The reality is the most important thing about the church is what it does without. When we open the doors we should be looking out of the church to "See all of the people." The focus of the modern Christian in many cases has become more about what is going on within the church than upon what is going on without. We have no trouble saying "This is the church; this is the steeple" part, but somewhere in the process of making those hand gestures we hit a snag. We have a disconnect with our ability to effectively get everyone within the church with a steeple to open the doors. We seem to feel a struggle with the "Open the doors and see all the people" part. Opening a door starts with one person deciding a door needs to be opened and then doing something about it. This book is an invitation to notice what we have missed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We resist change less when we associate it with mission and fortify it with hope. So argues longtime congregational consultant Peter Steinke in his fourth book, A Door Set Open, as he explores the relationship between the challenges of change and our own responses to new ideas and experiences. Steinke builds on a seldom-explored principle posited by the late Rabbi Edwin Friedman: the 'hostility of the environment' is proportionate to the 'response of the organism.' The key, Steinke says, is not the number or strength of the stressors in the system--anxiety, poor conditions, deteriorating values--but the response of the individual or organization to 'what is there.' Drawing on Bowen system theory and a theology of hope, as well as his experience working with more than two hundred congregations, Steinke makes the case that the church has entered an era of great opportunity. Theologian and sociologist Ernst Troeltsch said the church had closed down the office of eschatology. Steinke reopens it and draws our attention to God's future, to a vision of hope for the people of God. The door is set open for exploration and new creation.
