His mother had set a glass of milk on the table beside his bed, and left the stair door ajar so that he could call Hannah, the cook, if he wanted any thing, and then she had gone over to her own room. The little boy had always enjoyed being ill, for then he was read aloud to and had lemonade, but this had been a real illness, and though he was better now the doctor still would not let him have anything but milk and gruel. He was feeling rather lonely, too, though the fire crackled cheer fully, and he could hear Hannah singing to herself in the kitchen below. A little boy named Teddy, bedridden by a long illness, lies in his bed recuperating, when he is visited by the Counterpane[1] Fairy. She entertains him during her frequent visits with stories, each associated with quilted squares in the counterpane. During each visit she has him concentrate intently on a square until it turns into something and becomes a doorway into the story. Once inside the story, he becomes the lead character until the end when it fades away and he awakens. [1] a Counterpane is known variously as a quilt, eiderdown or throw. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Counterpane fairy, teddy, folklore, fairy tales, myths and legends, children’s stories, mothers with children, mothers to be, grandparents, pregnant women, Aureline, Bear, beautiful, bed-ridden, Bird-maiden, brave, castle, palace, circus, count, Dumpy, dwarfs, Ellen, flew, fountain, gamblesome, gold, Hannah, Harriett, hospital, illness, magic, mamma, mermen, Owl, Princess, rainbow, robber, Silverling, soldiers, Sprawley, square, Starlein, all of a sudden, ugly, whisper, widow, wings, yellow, dreams, entertain, tales and stories, visit,

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fairy Who Believed in Human Beings But now I am no longer a child, and since that pleasant time I have learned a few simple things, among them more about fairies. So, in this book, I will try to relieve the wonder ing minds of the children who would like to know more about them. But, before I begin, you must promise not to ask too many questions. Especially you must not ask, Is it true? For, you see, I am a timid person, easily embarrassed, and questions frighten me, particularly the one Is it true? I will forget what I started out to say if you embarrass me, and the result will be that very suddenly the printing in this book will stop altogether, and the pictures too, and there will be pages and pages with out anything ou them - not even a comma. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crimson Fairy Book Each Fairy Book demands a preface from the Editor, and these introductions are inevitably both monotonous and unavailing. A sense of literary honesty compels the Editor to keep repeating that he is the Editor, and not the author of the Fairy Tales, just as a distinguished man of science is only the Editor, not the Author of Nature. Like nature, popular tales are too vast to be the creation of a single modern mind. The Editor's business is to hunt for collections of these stories told by peasant or savage grandmothers in many climes, from New Caledonia to Zululand; from the frozen snows of the Polar regions to Greece, or Spain, or Italy, or far Lochaber. When the tales are found they are adapted to the needs of British children by various hands, the Editor doing little beyond guarding the interests of propriety, and toning down to mild reproofs the tortures inflicted on wicked stepmothers, and other naughty characters. These explanations have frequently been offered already; but, as far as ladies and children are concerned, to no purpose. They still ask the Editor how he can invent so many stories - more than Shakespeare, pumas, and Charles Dickens could have invented in a century. And the Editor still avers, in Prefaces, that he did not invent one of the stories; that nobody knows, as a rule, who invented them, or where, or when.
