Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corsican Lovers: A Story of the Vendetta "You have no right, Pascal, to command me to marry a man whom I do not love." The speaker was a young girl not more than eighteen years of age. As she spoke, the flashing of her eyes and her clenched hands betokened the intensity of her feelings. The person to whom the words were addressed was a man of about forty. He was smooth-shaven, and the black, shaggy eyebrows which met above the bridge of his nose, gave to his face a stem and almost forbidding expression. He did not reply to his sisters impassioned words for some time, but sat, apparently unconcerned, tapping lightly on the library table with the fingers of his right hand. At last he spoke: "I do not command you, Vivienne; all I ask is that you will comply with your fathers dying wish." "How do you know that it was his dying wish? He was dead when found, stabbed to the heart, as you told me, by Manuel Delia Coscia - that brave Corsican who ran away to escape the vengeance he so well deserved." The man looked up approvingly. "My sister, that was spoken like a true Batistelli. If you loved your father, as your words seem to indicate, I do not see how you can disobey his slightest wish." Book excerpt: Sybilia turned as if sleepwalking and, trance-like, walked down the stone steps to the living room. She shuddered as she took the rifle from the peg on the wall, but after only a moment's hesitation, she loaded it and went outside. Sybilia Rocca is beautiful, gentle and intelligent. But she is also Corsican and in her blood runs the intense passions of her race - the passions that drive her to shoot her father-in-law before stunned witnesses in the small square of the windswept town set high on a Corsican hillside. What is the terrible secret - the dark act of treachery twenty years before - that compels Sybilia to carry out her vendetta? Virtually everyone in the village knows, yet the unwritten law of their culture keeps them silenced. And now Sybilia is fighting for her life, gripped by a passion strong enough to destroy it...

Book excerpt: The Corsican Brothers tells the story of two conjoined brothers who, though separated at birth, can still feel each other's pains. The story starts in March 1841, when the narrator travels to Corsica and stays at the home of the widow Savilia de Franchi who lives near Olmeto and Sullacaro. She is a mother of a former conjoined twin, Louis and Lucien. Louis is a lawyer in Paris, while Lucien clings on to his Corsican roots and thus stays at his mother's home. The narrator learns that the brothers were once conjoined, but separated at birth by a doctor with his scalpel. Despite being separated Louis and Lucien can still feel each other's emotions, even at distance. Lucien explains he has a mission to undertake, with reluctance. He has to mediate in a vendetta between the Orlandi and Colona families and invites the narrator to accompany him and meet the head of the Orlandi family. Alexandre Dumas, père (1802-1870) was a French writer whose works have been translated into nearly 100 languages and he is one of the most widely read French authors. His most famous works are The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.
