Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides both a broad perspective and a focused examination of cow care as a subject of widespread ethical concern in India, and increasingly in other parts of the world. In the face of what has persisted as a highly charged political issue over cow protection in India, intellectual space must be made to bring the wealth of Indian traditional ethical discourse to bear on the realities of current human-animal relationships, particularly those of humans with cows. Dharma, yoga, and bhakti paradigms serve as starting points for bringing Hindu—particularly Vaishnava Hindu—animal ethics into conversation with contemporary Western animal ethics. The author argues that a culture of bhakti—the inclusive, empathetic practice of spirituality centered in Krishna as the beloved cowherd of Vraja—can complement recently developed ethics-of-care thinking to create a solid basis for sustaining all kinds of cow care communities.

Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive study of the national and global environmental effects of India's livestock production system. The first few chapters provide a descriptive account of India's livestock biodiversity as determined by environmental conditions, modes of livestock farming, chief features of mixed livestock farming integrated with agriculture, and its direct and indirect linkages with environment. The authors have also formulated an environmental model of the livestock production system in an input-output framework. Environmental effects are shown to occur on both sides of the system. The model should be of interest to environmental scientists and economists. Based on the model the book provides estimates of greenhouse gases (methane) emission from cattle and buffaloes, carbon dioxide emission prevented due to animal energy use in agriculture arising out of fossil-fuel saving, arable land area saved by recycling agricultural by-products as animal feed, as also from during cake as a source of biofuel, and the saving of chemical fertilizers by using during as manure. The authors then value these positive environmental contributions in rupee terms. Interestingly, they conclude that the sum of these values is much more than the value of output of India's livestock sector as a whole. Finally, the book compares the environmental effects of the Indian dairy production system with that of the US. This comparison is particularly addressed to environmentally concerned readers in the developed world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cow-Keeping in India: A Simple and Practical Book on Their Care, and Treatment, Their Various Breeds, and the Means of Rendering Them Profitable There are many books on cattle and their care in Europe; but though these books are a great help to people in Europe, they are of no practical use to us in India. The climate and soil of India are different from those of England and other European countries, and the cattle here need different treatment. Some books have been published on Indian cattle, but the best of these is far from being complete. I have for the past eighteen years kept my own cows and for many years have myself undertaken their medical treatment. I have also carefully read. All the books I could procure on cattle of all descriptions, both English and Indian. The knowledge I have thus acquired may be of some service to others, so I herein give my experience for what it may be worth. The method of treatment that I herein recommend, for cows in health and sickness, is what I have most successfully adopted for many years. I generally adhere to homoeopathy, and in most cases it is the only effectual method of treatment; but in many cases I have found the native remedies very efficacious. I do not hesitate to prescribe the most effective remedy, be it homoeopathic or native medicine, or anything else. As I have said, I have carefully read many books on cattle, their diseases and treatment; and in my notes I have tried as much as possible to avoid even the appearance of plagiarism. But it is impossible for any two persons writing on one subject, and especially a subject like this, to avoid often saying the same thing, and sometimes saying it in the same words. Book excerpt: Hugely controversial upon its publication in India, this book has already been banned by the Hyderabad Civil Court and the author's life has been threatened. Jha argues against the historical sanctity of the cow in India, in an illuminating response to the prevailing attitudes about beef that have been fiercely supported by the current Hindu right-wing government and the fundamentalist groups backing it.

Since the first edition was published in 1991 therehave been significant improvements in disease control andmanagement of cattle. Almost all parts of the book have beenupdated and completely rewritten. There are new chapters onsurgery, embryo transfer, artificial insemination, ethno-veterinarymedicine and biosecurity, and a new consolidating chapter on theinteraction between the animal, environment, management anddisease. The previous edition has sold all over the world, and as aresult of this a greater emphasis has been placed on conditions andtheir treatment in areas other than temperate regions. A newsection entitled "Global Variation in Cattle Practice" has beenincluded with contributors discussing bovine medicine practice intheir part of the world. All in all this is an outstanding resource for any practisingvet and an excellent reference for veterinary students.
