Book excerpt: A comprehensive collection of the bizarre tales of Mrs Molesworth The writer who was always known by her formal title Mrs Molesworth, was in fact born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands to English parents in 1839 and christened Mary Louisa Stewart. Her father was a successful Manchester businessman and Mary was educated both in England and Switzerland. In 1861 she married Major R. Molesworth, a nephew of Viscount Molesworth, an Irish aristocrat. Their marriage was ultimately unsuccessful and they were legally separated in 1879. Her first fiction-the 1869 novel 'Lover and Husband'-was published under the pseudonym Ennis Graham. As was common among authors of the day she wrote in a number of genres but-curiously-she was most prolific as a writer of children's' fiction, particularly for girls who were too old for fairytales but to young for adult fiction. These tales were for those who would eventually become Victorian wives and mothers and so were rich with the sentiments of duty and morality. These may seem like dubious credentials to those interested in good supernatural fiction and especially to those who have not actually read any of Mrs Molesworth's stories of ghosts and hauntings. However, this would be to do the author a great injustice for the only shortcoming concerning her strange tales is that she did not write more of them. Her talent for the genre will be immediately apparent to the reader and, indeed, several of the tales included here are recognised as classics and were highly regarded by the supernatural writer and academic M. R. James. Among the fifteen stories in this special Leonaur collection-which we believe (at the time of publication) is the only comprehensive gathering of Mary Molesworth's tales of the other worldly available-are 'The Story of the Rippling Train, ' 'At the Dip of the Road, ' 'The Man with the Cough, ' 'Half way Between the Stiles' and many others. Also included in this collection is a story by Mary Molesworth's son Bevil, 'A Ghost of the Pampas.' Bevil died on his Patagonian ranch when in his mid twenties. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: A three volume collection of the ghostly tales of Mrs. Oliphant Scottish author, Margaret Oliphant belonged to a well known and highly regarded group of female fiction writers of the Victorian period. Their individual talents are undeniable, but their career paths often followed a remarkably similar pattern. Most were writers of both novels and short stories, all were prolific and able to turn their pens successfully to a variety subjects and themes. Many of them wrote regularly for the periodicals of the day, and Mrs. Oliphant (her usual nom-de-plume) frequently wrote for 'Blackwood's Magazine' and specialised in the creation of tales of domestic realism, historical fiction and the genre for which she is most remembered today, ghost stories. That harshest of literary critics-and one of the finest exponents of the craft of supernatural fiction-M. R. James thought highly of Margaret Oliphant's work in the genre, drawing particular attention in his writings on the subject to her long ghost story 'The Beleaguered City, ' which is included in this comprehensive three volume edition of Mrs. Oliphant's well crafted and chilling tales of the uncanny. In volume two readers will find long and haunting stories of the strange and unusual including 'Old Lady Mary, ' 'A Beleaguered City', 'The Open Door, ' 'The Lady's Walk, ' 'The Library Window' and 'The Portrait'. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

These stories replicate the Victorian fascination with the eerie and the uncanny. In the first tale, "The Shadow within the Moonlight," a young woman encounters a mysterious shadow that leads her to a haunting revelation. The 2nd story, "The Man with the Cough," introduces a spectral determine who elicits a mixture of worry and sympathy. "The Strange Disappearance of Mr. Jeremiah Redworth" follows a weird disappearance that raises questions about the boundaries between life and dying. The very last story, "The Shadow in the Picture," delves into the eerie connection among a painting and a ghostly presence. Mrs. Molesworth, a prolific Victorian author recognised for her contributions to children's literature, displays her storytelling prowess in these ghostly narratives. The memories are characterized by using a subtle combo of mental suspense and supernatural factors, growing some surroundings of intrigue and mystery. Mrs. Molesworth's exploration of the supernatural aligns with the Victorian fascination with the mysterious and the unknown, making "Four Ghost Stories" a charming addition to the ghost story tradition of the technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second collection of superb Victorian ghostly fiction Aficionados of supernatural fiction are aware that its golden age was during the later Victorian and Edwardian eras. There was a huge public appetite for spine chilling tales and many magazines published their ideal form-the short story. This created opportunities for many writers to produce supernatural fiction. Among the huge number of stories published, some were exceptionally good and these came from the pens of those who became recognised masters of the form. Popular authors were often incredibly prolific and an individual writer's canon of supernatural fiction could be substantial. Almost every commercially minded writer wrote some supernatural fiction and many of the finest exponents of the craft were women. While Mrs. J. H. Riddell had much in common with her peers, she was highly regarded by some of the genres severest critics including the 'grand-master' himself, M. R. James. Charlotte Cowan was born in Ireland in 1832, the daughter of the High Sheriff of Antrim. She moved to London in 1855 and shortly thereafter married the civil engineer Joseph Hadley Riddell. As was often the practice at the time she subsequently wrote under her formal married name. Besides her career as a writer she was also a publisher, being part owner of the highly regarded literary periodical 'The St. Jame's Magazine.' This comprehensive Leonaur collection of Charlotte Riddell's strange stories comprises three substantial volumes to captivate both enthusiasts and collectors. Volume two of this Leonaur collection of Mrs. Riddell's spooky tales includes the novel 'The Nun's Curse' and two short stories 'Sandy the Tinker' and 'A Strange Christmas Game.' Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Chambers most famous and most highly regarded work is undoubtedly, 'The King in Yellow'-a collection of stories held by the common theme of a drama of the same title which drives those who read it to insanity. It is widely accepted that this work is one of the most important in the whole library of American supernatural writing. Nevertheless, it is but part of Chambers' output in the field of weird and supernatural writings, so this special Leonaur collection of Chambers fiction in the genre-which of course includes the stories that comprise 'The King in Yellow'-runs to a satisfying four substantial volumes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty tales from beyond the veil from a mistress of the strange and other worldly It is widely held that many of the finest writers of the classic ghostly and macabre story were women. Some would propose that this remains true among modern exponents of the craft. It was certainly true of Amelia Edwards whose collection of otherworldly fiction is highly regarded and extensive, notwithstanding her many other talents. It is interesting that Edwards came into contact with another famous ghost story writer, Charles Dickens, as a consequence of providing articles, poetry and stories for his magazine, Household Words. Whether by coincidence or design Edwards' literary style was so similar to Dickens' as to cause confusion as to the identity of the actual author of some stories. Whilst this will please Dickens aficionados, Edwards own work stands on its own merits as a fine collection of Victorian gothic tales. In later life Edwards became an Egyptologist and was responsible for the preservation of many priceless monuments and artefacts. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket. Leonaur hard covers make fine collectors editions featuring real cloth bindings, taped head and tail bands and gold foil lettering upon their spines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collected Mrs. Gaskell-a cornucopia of Victorian horror and spectral visitations Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (or as she was known 'Mrs. Gaskell') was born as Elizabeth Stevenson in Chelsea, London in 1810. Gaskell was a prolific author, writing short stories, novels and non-fiction of social history as well as a notable biography of Charlotte Bronte. It would have been unusual had she not also written ghostly tales, because she lived at a time when chilling tales were highly popular. Indeed she was persuaded to do so by Charles Dickens, an enthusiast for the form who had also encouraged several other writers to make forays into the genre. Perhaps inevitably Gaskell's scary, gothic fiction appeared in Dickens' magazine 'Household Words, ' a showcase also for several of her contemporaries. Gaskell's stories not only 'ticked all the boxes' commercially, but her ability ensured that her stories, well regarded in her own time, have endured as among the best examples of Victorian supernatural fiction. Apart from her supernatural writings Mrs. Gaskell is especially remembered today for her novels, 'Cranford' and 'North and South.' Volume two of Mrs. Gaskells gothic chillers includes the novel 'A Dark Night's Work, ' four novelettes 'Crowley Castle, ' 'Lizzie Leigh, ' 'Morton Hall, ' and 'Half a Lifetime Ago, ' and five short stories. Book excerpt: A second helping from the 'Queen of Sensation' and her dark imaginings Lovers of the Victorian fiction of Wilkie Collins know that to discover his female counterpart they need look no further than the works of Mary Elizabeth Braddon. She was a prolific author of the kind of dark melodrama much loved by her contemporary audience and her most renowned work, 'Lady Audley's Secret, ' has been often dramatised, filmed and, indeed, has never been out of print from the time of its original publication. Never was the accolade, 'The Queen of Sensation' so well deserved as it was by her. It is not unusual that a writer who produced so much material-and much of that with a flavour of the Gothic-should also turn her talents to the genre of supernatural and strange fiction, since there was much precedent for it among her literary peers and much appetite for it among the reading public. So it is, perhaps, unsurprising that this Leonaur collection of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's forays into the other worldly and bizarre runs to four substantial, satisfying volumes. In this second volume the principal work is the novel, 'The Conflict'. A duel to the death is generally recognised as being a conclusive end to the matter-but the victor here discovers that that may not always be true!.This novel was originally published in two volumes-both of which are included in this special Leonaur edition. Also here are the novelettes 'At Chrighton Abbey' and 'Dr. Carrick' and the short story 'Her Last Appearance.' This collection is available in soft cover and hardcover with dustjacket. Leonaur hardcovers are cloth bound with head and tail bands and gold foil embossed spines.
