Book excerpt: An outstanding Four Volume collection of the unearthly from the pen of a master Henry James was a notable American author who lived and worked in England for forty years of his life-becoming a nationalised British subject shortly before his death. He is especially remembered for his portrayal of Americans abroad and for the creativity and freedom he displayed within his diverse literary perspectives. His novels remain highly regarded and continually read. Among them are Washington Square, The Bostonians, The Ambassadors and others. In any list of James' notable achievements one title frequently appears first-just as in every list of the most highly regarded supernatural fiction a James work is also certain to appear. That story is, of course, the novella, 'The Turn of the Screw'-a tale of creeping supernatural threat, terror, polluted innocence and inevitable tragedy. It is a deserved classic of supernatural fiction and true to the nature of such things subordinates James's other work in the genre almost to obscurity. Predictably a prolific author who had both a talent for and an interest in the fiction of the bizarre and ghostly would be unlikely to venture into its shadowy realms but once. This special Leonaur collection of Henry James' supernatural fiction fills four substantial volumes for modern readers to relish. A veritable literary feast is in store for those who dare to venture within its pages. In this first volume appears the famous, 'The Turn of the Screw' and another novella, 'The Lesson of the Master, ' plus two novelettes, 'The Marriages' and 'The Private Life' and seven shorter works including, 'The Romance of Certain Old Clothes, ' 'Brooksmith' and others.

This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of the works of a literary master of strange fiction Sir Hugh Walpole was one of the most popular and prolific British authors of the first half of the 20th century. After the publication of his first novel, 'The Wooden Horse', in 1909 he produced one significant work each year including the acclaimed 'Herries' series. Born in New Zealand in 1884, the son of an Anglican clergyman, Walpole was committed to becoming a writer and encouraged in his ambition by Henry James and Arnold Bennett. A. C. Benson was also a mentor and early influence upon his writing. Despite his acknowledged talent as a storyteller, Walpole's work has been largely ignored since his death in 1941, in part because he was savagely lampooned by Somerset Maugham's fictional characterisation of him in 'Cakes & Ale'. Walpole, in keeping with many of his contemporaries, wrote in several genres of fiction and among his thirty-six novels, five volumes of short stories and two plays are historical, juvenile and even detective stories. His associations with A. C. Benson, Henry James, H. G. Wells and the fact that Horace Walpole (author of the first gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto') and Richard Harris Barham (author of the 'Ingoldsby Legends') were both among his ancestors surely stimulated his taste for gothic and macabre fiction. In fact, during the 1930s Walpole edited two well received anthologies of 'creepy stories' in which some of his own material appeared. His own literary excursions into the world of the ghostly and bizarre, which remain highly regarded by aficionados of supernatural fiction, include several novels and a substantial number of short stories all of which are included in this three volume Leonaur collected edition. Included in this first volume are the novel 'The Old Ladies' and fifteen short stories of the strange and unusual including 'The White Cat', 'Lizzie Rand', 'Mrs. Porter and Miss Allen', 'The Tiger' and 'The Twisted Inn'. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uneasy and spellbinding tales of a great American author Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the earliest admired American novelists and short story writers. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, his origins ever influenced his work. His tales were invariably set in New England, were darkly romantic and were often concerned with the occult and witches and their works in particular. Indeed, one of Hawthorne's ancestors actually sat as a judge during the famous Salem Witch Trials, so the author's inspiration could barely have stronger foundations. Predictably Hawthorne's stories contain puritanical messages on the themes of sin, guilt and fundamental evil which go well with stories that contain uncanny and, sometimes, almost surreal elements. Although Hawthorne was decidedly popular with readers opinions about his work was sharply divided among his peers. Poe was a particularly harsh critic. Nevertheless, more recent analysis has suggested that he remains-possibly-America's greatest novelist, challenged only by Henry James and William Faulkner. This Leonaur collection of four volumes has gathered together Hawthorne's tales which contain elements of the weird and bizarre. It contains very well known works and those that may be less familiar. In volume one readers will discover the novel, 'The House of the Seven Gables' and the novelette, 'Rappaccini's Daughter, ' together with fifteen short stories including 'The Great Stone Face, ' 'Dr. Heidegger's Experiment, ' 'The Wedding Knell, ' 'Drowne's Wooden Image, ' 'The Snow-Image' and others. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume one of a unique three volume collection Mrs. Henry Wood was one of a notable cadre of proficient authors of all manner of fiction, much of which appeared serially in the numerous periodicals of the Victorian period. Ellen Wood (formerly Price) was born in Worcestershire in 1815 and is principally remembered as the author of 'East Lynne'-one of the most popular sensation novels of the mid-19th century. She wrote over 30 novels as well as many shorter works of mystery, crime and suspense. Her supernatural fiction has endured by virtue of its lasting quality and has been acclaimed by aficionados and critics alike, including the not lightly given approbation of M. R. James. The Victorian public's appetite for stories of the weird and ghostly was insatiable and huge amounts of it was published. This resulted in a golden age for the genre. Almost every popular fiction writer of the period tried their hand at ghostly or terrifying stories, including some of the most notable authors of the time such as Dickens, R. L. Stevenson, Kipling and Conan Doyle. Some became well known and well regarded 'specialists' in the ghostly tale; foremost among these were women writers who had a particular talent for supernatural themes. Among the first rank of these was Mrs Henry Wood and this substantial Leonaur three volume collection is probably the first comprehensive collection of her other worldly fiction to be published. In volume one readers will discover 'Featherston's Story, ' 'A Mystery, ' 'Gina Montani' and ten more stories of the strange and unusual. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of Violet Paget, she was born to British parents in France in 1856. Today she is remembered for her numerous works on art, music and travel, but most especially for her superb supernatural fiction. Although British and writing primarily for an English speaking market, she spent most of her life living and working on the continent. Lee is an inspirational female and feminist figure, who dressed as a man and formed passionate long term lesbian relationships. Her subtle supernatural fiction focussed on the exploration of the enduring themes of haunting and possession and sometimes contains elements of palpable terror. A contemporary, Montague Summers, the eccentric British writer and clergyman, noted for his own literary forays into the uncanny, wrote that in his opinion 'she was the greatest of the modern exponents of the supernatural in fiction.' This gives some indication of the respect in which Lee was held by her peers. She was a personal friend of the writer Henry James, author of that iconic story of malevolent haunting 'The Turn of the Screw, ' and it is logical to assume that this relationship would certainly have had an influence on her fiction. Lees collection Hauntings appeared in 1890, and her famous story 'Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady' appeared in the Yellow Book in 1895. This notorious and hugely influential publication featured the often erotic art of Aubrey Beardsley and the work of notable writers including Max Beerbohm, Arnold Bennett, Henry James, H. G Wells, William Butler Yeats and many others. Although Lee's fame may not have endured as abidingly as some of her contemporaries of the fin de siecle period, she rightly deserves a place in the pantheon of authors of the supernatural and this comprehensive, Leonaur collection is the perfect way for readers to reap the many rewards of her work. This special two volume edition contains twenty four fantastic examples of Lee's tales of the haunted and possessed. Volume one includes the novelettes 'Winthrop's Adventure, ' 'A Phantom Lover, ' 'A Seeker of Pagan Perfection' and the 'The Gods and Ritter Tanhuser' together with 'The Hidden Door' and six more short stories. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-four masterful strange tales by the grand master of the nature of fear There has been much written about Montague Rhodes James that needs no repetition here. To those who know anything of the literature of the supernatural his name and work stands on the highest tier in the Pantheon of the greatest writers of the genre. James brought his horrors to his readers genteelly wrapped in the fine prose of an academic often describing the apparently logical lives and worlds of fictional nondescript academics and antiquarians. Brilliantly, his menaces creep into the safe lives of unsuspecting, undynamic personalities-into the very fabric of the ordinary in notably commonplace scenarios. In this lies the James genius, for he understood well that it is the subtle menace of approaching horror that builds the most terror and that what we all fear most, born out of our primeval fear of darkness, is the unknown and the unfathomable. James' ghosts rarely come shrieking out of a closet. They hint at their presence, they unsettle and then they approach with dreadful inexorability. Among those who know the genre of supernatural fiction well many regard M. R. James as its finest exponent. For those who are yet to experience his delicious chills this volume will be a revelation and an abiding pleasure. This special Leonaur edition of all the M. R. James supernatural and weird fiction completed and published in his lifetime contains the enduringly popular 'Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book, ' 'Lost Hearts' and 'The Ash-Tree' as well as less familiar gems such as 'The Tractate Middoth' and 'Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance.' In all, a feast of thirty-four small masterpieces including James' strange novella for younger readers 'The Five Jars.' Leonaur editions are available in softcover and hardcover with dustjacket-ideal for collectors or as a special gift to be forever treasured. Leonaur hardbacks are bound in full cloth and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
