Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Codling Moth and How to Control It by Spraying Only from 5 to 20 per cent. Of the larvae survive the winter. An examination of seven trees, which averaged 38 cocoons per tree in the fall, showed but 5 per cent. Alive in the spring, 87 per cent. Having been killed by birds, 4 per cent. By disease and 3 per cent. By cold. In another orchard cocoons were exam ined in May, 1907, with 19 per cent. Alive, 66 per cent. Having been killed by birds, 6 per cent. By disease and 9 per cent. By cold. It is quite evident that the birds, particularly the downy woodpeckers and the nuthatches are the most important enemies of the codling moth in New England and that they should be given every protection and be attracted to the orchard in every way possible. The Transformation. During May or early June, the cater pillar opens the end of the cocoon and spins a silken tube from it to the surface. Then retiring to the cocoon, with its head towards the opening, it sheds its winter clothes, transforming into a pupa. The pupa is a dormant stage in which the insect has almost no power of motion, and shows but little sign of life, but during which wonderful changes in its structure are going on, so that from the old tissues of the worm-like larva are formed the organs of the active, winged moth. In 1906 pupation com menced May 7, the last larva did not pupate until early in June, but the average date was May 25. In June, 1907, the average date of pupation was June 16 or three weeks later, while in 1908 the average date was June 1, the first pupa being on May 20 and the last June 9. The time of pupation is therefore seen to vary greatly with the season, but with average weather condi tions to occur about June 1. More than one variety was usually included. Where possible, one highly susceptible and one less susceptible to codling moth attack were chosen. The or chards ranged in size from 8 acres to nearly 200 acres. In large orchards representative blocks not exceeding 40 acres were chosen for sampling. An article on this insect was published In the Yearbook of the department for 1905 in a paper entitled The principal insect enemies of the peach. Circular 73 of the Bureau of Entomology, on the plum curculio, by Messrs. Fred Johnson and A. A. Girault, was published in 1906; and the results of a comparison of the demonstration and one - spray methods in the control of the codling moth and plum curculio were published in November, 1910, as Part VII of Bulletin no. 80 of the Bureau of Entomology, a revised edition of which was issued March 30, 1911. Circular 120 of the Bureau of Entomology, entitled Control of the Brown - rot and Plum Curculio on Peaches, by W. M. Scott, of the Bureau of Plant Indus try, and the senior author, was issued in March, 1910. This gave instructions for the preparation and use Of a combined spray for the curculio and fungous diseases of the fruit of the peach. The results of further experiments in peach spraying for the curculio, brown - rot, and scab were given in Farmers' Bulletin 440, by W. M. Scott and the senior author, published in March, 1911. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 17: March 31, 1967 Codling moth populations in wisconsin were low all season. Moths were detected in blacklight traps by June, second-generation larvae were observed by July, and second-generation moths were evident by late August. General emergence was under way during the middle of June in Kent County, michigan. Sprays were effective, but late season activity of second-brood adults resulted in late September larval injury of apples in some southwest Michigan and Kent County orchards. Remaining one of the major apple pests in indiana, codling moth damaged commercial apples very little, however. _peak emergence of overwintered adults in ohio occurred during early June. Injury to apples became apparent along with almost fully developed, first-generation larvae by late June and early July. First-generation adults emerged in increasing numbers until the beginning of August. Damage was abnormal because of fruit loss from frost in most of the southern half of Ohio. Where spray programs had been partially or completely abandoned, codling moth infested nearly all of the crop. Also, because of curtailed control programs, more injury than usual occurred in virginia. Codling moth was medium on an abandoned apple orchard early in the season at Hancock, maryland. Possibly due to parasites, the second brood was generally light. Populations were very light in well managed apple orchards and typically abundant in backyard apple plantings in new jersey. Codling moth infested unsprayed connecticut orchards and damaged fru1t in unsprayed vermont trees. Bait-trap collections in maine indicated an above average number of second - brood adults.
