Even in America numerous publications have appeared, covering more or less thoroughly certain special systems or questions which have arisen from time to time. Much of our literature is in the form of reports or is contained in periodicals and in the proceedings of societies; but no general and comprehensive treatise on sewerage has yet appeared in this country. The publishers of the present volume have therefore done a good service in preparing for American readers a translation of Prof. Baumeister's recent work. The author, whose name is already familiar to a number of American engineers, is well versed in the subject, though not a practising engineer. His object has been to present in a compact form the elementary principles which govern ail the essential parts of a design, and to confine himself to the usual practical questions, rather than to dilate on the more intricate problems which occasionally arise. His impartiality, characteristic thoroughness, and judicial temper have fitted him to present the subject-matter, concerning which all controversy has not yet ceased, in a more balanced and scientific form than I have seen in any other book. We can therefore credit this work with the additional merit of tending to restrain any reader from plunging headlong into theories and practices which, both in Europe and America, are occasionally advocated by parties who fail to see all sides of the subject, or who are biased in the direction of their personal interests. In using this book for practical purposes, the American reader should realize that it was written primarily for German engineers, and for conditions prevalent in the German Empire.
