Previous to the introduction, of vaccination, the deaths from small-pox in London alone averaged about two thousand annually, as appears from the bills of mortality. In a single year, 1776, more than three thousand and five hun dred died of this disease in that city. The Spanish historians of the conquest of Mexico relate that in a short time after the small-pox reached the capital more than three millions and a half of lives were lost by it in that nation alone.
