Snowy clusters of wild plums or of service blossoms shine out from the woods here and there, but the event of the day is the endless procession of blossom ing peach trees. They go dancing by, hour after hour; trees, old and young, large and small, standing in all attitudes, graceful, laughing, exquisite there is no end to them. From the sea to the mountains, the whole South is smiling through a veil Of peach blossoms. As finally you approach the mountains that form the western end Of North Carolina, you catch glimpses of heights SO divinely blue that you seem about to enter some dream world through their magical por tals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Scenery IT has been the custom, in years past, for the seekers of health or pleasure, as the warm sun and miasma of the low lands warned them of approaching danger, to turn their atten tion towards the North 3 and it is only of late that the Virginia Springs, with all their invigorating powers, have been the stopping-place of others than the proud sons and daughters of the Old Dominion. But even yet the mountains of Western North Carolina, with mineral waters equal to any, and a cli mate superior to any other, are comparatively neglected. And we see even prominent citizens of our own State, year after year, journeying to Saratoga, and other watering-places of the North. They are familiar with every spot at Niagara or Sara toga, but cannot give an idea of the western part of their own State, except as they have scantily derived it from others. Such an accusation, however, cannot so truthfully be brought against our brethren of the State of South Carolina. For many years it has been their custom to resort to our mountains for the promotion of their health, for recreation and pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Guide to Asheville and Western North Carolina This book is intended to be of practical value to the tourist in finding the chief resorts of this region. No attempt has been made to describe the beauties of the mountain resorts, such description being hardly necessary in a work of this kind, and because it is impossible to convey in language an idea of the picturesqueness of the scenery. The engravings are from original drawings by Mr. Roger Davis, and were made expressly for this work. Their artistic merit will be appreciated by the cultivated reader. One of the chief characteristics of Mr. Davis' work is its rare fidelity to nature. He makes no attempt to idealize, believing that the imagination of the artist can add noth ing to the natural arrangement of mountain, valley and stream. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of the Mountain Region of North Carolina The mountain region of North Carolina, Forest Survey Unit 4, emf braces 21 counties located west of the Piedmont Plateau (figure The total area involved is acres, nearly one - fifth the area of the State. Physiographically, the mountains of North Carolina are included in the Blue Ridge division of the Southern Appalachians. In Virginia the Blue Ridge is narrow, but in North Carolina it widens out to form a high plateau, broken by mountain masses and river basins, extending from.the Piedmont of North Carolina on the east to Tennessee on the west. The east ern edge is bounded by an irregular chain of mountains known as the Blue Ridge, which extends across the state from northeast to southwest. Viewed from the Piedmont this chain presents a steep and rugged escarpment to feet high. The plateau is enclosed on the west by the Iron, Great Smoky, and Unaka Mountains, which form the boundary between North Carolina and Tennessee.
