Book excerpt: The best things come in small packages... self-help, motivation, philosophy, social commentary and humour, are all rolled into this little book of quotes and snippets. Ideal for the office shelf, bedtime reading or stress-busting short breaks, this handy, easy-to-carry volume, does not have any one lesson to share, but many ? which one can come back to again and again whenever one wishes to. It is not a one-time read but an enjoyable multiple reading venture with assorted quotes from some well-known and some not-so-well-known people, in addition to the author's insightful and sometimes irreverent, snippets. Some of the quotes hit hard and compel us to put on our thinking caps, while others are light and funny, but always eye-opening. Some can be put up on our screens to motivate ourselves while others just may not resonate with a person right away, but nevertheless make one reflect. This is truly The Book Under My Pillow...

Like a diamond in the rough, all of the kids who killed were tough and protected on the outside while hiding a glimmer of promise inside. For many of these children, the Thomas’s were their last hope. With the guidance of this courageous family, their stories of survival and victory break the unwritten code of silence about children without a conscience. Through therapeutic intervention comes the spellbinding metamorphosis of nine children. Although it stems from the deepest of human suffering, each shining triumph will leave you uplifted and celebrating life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published on the occasion of the 2010 exhibition at David Zwirner in New York, Who is sleeping on my pillow marked the first time Andersson and Nordstrom presented their work in concurrent solo shows. The book showcases their work from the late 1980s to 2010 in over two hundred full-color plates, as well as numerous reproductions of family snapshots and source material. The Swedish artist couple Mamma Andersson and Jockum Nordstrom have been at the forefront of contemporary figurative art since the late 1980s. Updating Vuillard for a post-Hitchcock age, Andersson paints beguilingly eerie interiors and landscapes. Nordstrom’s detailed collages, watercolors, and drawings occupy a more folkloric realm peopled by historical and contemporary characters enacting sexual and social roles across broad narrative panoramas. Included in Who is sleeping on my pillow are texts by Paolo Colombo and Anders Kruger, a poem by Stig Claesson, and an interview with Nordstrom by Marcel Dzama. As Colombo notes in his accompanying essay, “The miracle is that Jockum and Mamma spent more than half of their life together, and that over the years their complicity has guided them into the artists they are, each the complement and the best sounding board for the other.” The publication was reissued to coincide with Nordstrom’s 2014 exhibition, For the insects and the hounds, at David Zwirner in London, and Andersson’s 2015 presentation, Behind the Curtain, at the gallery in New York.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merging biography, memoir, and cultural history, this compelling book, a bestseller in France, traces the life of Dora Maar (1907–1997) through a serendipitous encounter with the artist’s address book. In search of a replacement for his lost Hermès agenda, Brigitte Benkemoun’s husband buys a vintage diary on eBay. When it arrives, she opens it and finds inside private notes dating back to 1951—twenty pages of phone numbers and addresses for Balthus, Brassaï, André Breton, Jean Cocteau, Paul Éluard, Leonor Fini, Jacqueline Lamba, and other artistic luminaries of the European avant-garde. After realizing that the address book belonged to Dora Maar—Picasso’s famous “Weeping Woman” and a brilliant artist in her own right—Benkemoun embarks on a two-year voyage of discovery to learn more about this provocative, passionate, and enigmatic woman, and the role that each of these figures played in her life. Longlisted for the prestigious literary award Prix Renaudot, Finding Dora Maar is a fascinating and breathtaking portrait of the artist. “Beautifully written and fascinating.”—Paris Match “One of the happy surprises of the end of the literary season.”—Livres Hebdo “A highly moving portrait of the artist.”—Elle (France) This book received support from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States through their publishing assistance program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiration for Girls on the Threshold of Change "Before I go to sleep each night Before I turn off every light Let me put away my fears Let me brush away the tears" The heartfelt prayers in this luminous volume were originally written for the comfort and inspiration of a twelve-year-old girl named Julia. The author of these prayers is Julia's mother, who wrote them because she was troubled that she and her daughter no longer talked as much as they used to. So each night, she left a verse on Julia's pillow. Julia shared them with her younger sister and with her friends, and the prayers moved outward in ever-widening circles. Now everyone can enjoy and meditate upon these simple supplications, whose words, feelings, and perspective are those of a girl growing into womanhood. Nearly one hundred and fifty prayers encourage girls to look inward for the strength to heal hurts, calm fears, and reconcile with family and friends. They present the values of self-reliance and confidence, celebrating the gift of life and the unique pleasure and challenges of being a girl. Each prayer is a loving act of faith, and together they provide a safe and private space in which a girl can simply be and grow.
