He has come from seeing the Veiled Lady, a popular phenomenon and mesmerist. He encounters Mr. Moodie, an elderly man, who mysteriously asks about his plans and if he knows Zenobia, one of the women going to the community. Coverdale heads out on a wintry April day with Silas Foster and his wife. Zenobia enters, and he is struck by her beauty and wildness. She always wears an exotic flower in her hair. That evening the women prepare food and the men talk of the labor they will engage in. Zenobia and Coverdale discuss Hollingsworth, a man who is to join their society and is singularly devoted to his philanthropic cause of reforming criminals. Hollingsworth finally arrives, with a young and pale girl in tow. She stares obsessively at Zenobia, but no one knows who she is; an old man simply dropped her off. Zenobia seems annoyed by the girl's affection, and lightly mocks her to Coverdale, but decides to be nice to her. Coverdale catches a cold and spends the next few weeks convalescing. Hollingsworth takes care of him lovingly, but the two men disagree about the theories of Charles Fourier and their relation to the community. Coverdale thinks often of Zenobia and her secrets. As Coverdale starts to feel better, he joins his companions. Priscilla is less pale and unhappy, and has blossomed. Others have joined Blithedale in the interim and Coverdale wonders if the focus is too much on labor and the land. He also notices how close Hollingsworth, Zenobia, and Priscilla are. Rumors fly around the community about Hollingsworth and Zenobia, speculating as to whether they attached to each other. Moodie comes to visit, and reveals that he is Priscilla's father. He talks with Hollingsworth and Coverdale, and asks if Zenobia is kind to Priscilla. When he hears she is, he is very happy. Coverdale walks a distance away from the farm, and meets a strange man in the woods named Professor Westervelt, who annoys him with his insouciance and asks after Zenobia and Priscilla. He later sees Zenobia and Westervelt walking in the woods, and infers that they have some sort of connection, and that she hates him. Coverdale hears him advise to get rid of Priscilla. The community engages in readings and performances often, and one night Zenobia relates the tale of the Veiled Lady. Her tale captivates the group, but becomes too real when she surprised everyone by throwing a piece of fabric on Priscilla. Coverdale and his three companions also often spend time at a rock named Eliot's Pulpit, where Coverdale is prone to orations. Hollingsworth and Zenobia debate women's rights; Pricilla agrees with Hollingsworth and to Coverdale's surprise Zenobia seems to as well. He sees her and Hollingsworth exchange a gesture. Later Coverdale and Hollingsworth have a falling out since Coverdale will not join with the other man in using the farm's land for his philanthropic plan. Coverdale decides to leave Blithedale for a time. He takes a room at a Boston hotel and amuses himself by watching the boarding house denizens across the way. One day he realizes he is looking into a room that contains Zenobia, Priscilla, and Westervelt. Zenobia sees him and lowers the curtain with scorn. Coverdale is offended but decides he must call on them. Zenobia receives him, and their exchange makes Coverdale realizes she loves Hollingsworth. Coverdale asks to see Priscilla and she is brought out. It is clear she has no free will. Zenobia says the group has an engagement and they leave. Coverdale decides to find out more by talking to Moodie. He buys the man a drink and encourages him to talk. The old man speaks of his former life as Fauntleroy, and how he had two families; thus, Zenobia and Priscilla were half sisters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Blithedale Romance" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel of intrigue and mystery, set in post-colonial Massachusetts. The story tells of Mr. Miles Coverdale's involvement with the community at Blithedale, especially with the mystery surrounding two of the women there, Zenobia and Priscilla. "The Blithedale Romance" is a very interesting novel that reveals the secrets that exist, even within a very small society. The night before Coverdale goes to Blithedale, Mr. Moodie stops him in the street for a favor, but he changes his mind and refuses to reveal his purpose. In Blithedale, Coverdale meets Zenobia, and Hollingsworth arrives later that night with Priscilla who clings to Zenobia. When Coverdale gets sick, Hollingsworth cares for him, trying to convert him to his philanthropic purposes, and the two men become friends. The mystery surrounding the individual pasts of Zenobia and Priscilla perplex Coverdale. The community at Blithedale learns how to farm and becomes quite adept at the art of husbandry. Hollingsworth and Zenobia begin to court, often frequenting a sloping hill on the farm where they plan to build their residence, according to neighborhood gossip. Mr. Moodie visits to check on Priscilla and seems very interested and intent on learning the details of the friendship between Priscilla and Zenobia. Westervelt arrives at Blithedale and introduces himself to Zenobia, sharing secrets about Priscilla that leave Zenobia very discomposed. One afternoon, Zenobia tells "The Silvery Veil", a legend about the Veiled Lady, frightening Priscilla by throwing a piece of gossamer over Priscilla's head at the end of the tale. As the relationship between Hollingsworth and Zenobia progresses, Priscilla seems saddened by it, and Coverdale begins to suspect that Priscilla loves Hollingsworth. When Coverdale refuses to join Hollingsworth's philanthropic schemes, Hollingsworth, Zenobia and Priscilla begin to treat him differently.Coverdale leaves Blithedale and boards at a respectable hotel in town where he watches the inhabitants in the boarding-house across the streets. One day, Coverdale sees Zenobia in the boarding-house with Westervelt; he later visits her and Priscilla, but Zenobia is rude to him, and she and Priscilla leave with Westervelt. Curious about Priscilla, Coverdale seeks out Moodie and learns about Moodie's past as Fauntleroy, including that both Zenobia and Priscilla are his daughters. Several weeks later, Coverdale goes to an interview with the Veiled Lady where he encounters Hollingsworth. The Veiled Lady throws back her veil, revealing herself to be Priscilla, and leaves with Hollingsworth as though he is a refuge of safety. Coverdale returns to Blithedale and encounters Hollingsworth, Zenobia and Priscilla at Eliot's Pulpit in the midst of an intense conversation. Hollingsworth admits to Zenobia that he loves Priscilla, and then, he and Priscilla leave together. After sobbing inconsolably, Zenobia sends messages to Hollingsworth and Priscilla through Coverdale before bidding him goodbye. Coverdale sleeps, dreams, and wakes with the suspicion that Zenobia committed suicide. He wakes Hollingsworth and Silas Foster, and the three men search the river for Zenobia's body. They find and bury Zenobia's corpse. Years later, Coverdale cannot forgive Hollingsworth for his part in Zenobia's death, so he visits him old friend to find that Hollingsworth is very unhappy and condemns himself as Zenobia's murderer. Embarrassed, Coverdale confesses that he loves Priscilla.

Book excerpt: In November, being wearied with inland life, Hawthorne went back to the east, and settled for the winter in West Newton, Massachusetts, where he wrote "The Blithedale Romance." This book is founded on his experience at Brook Farm, ten years before, though the incidents, he says, are purely imaginary, and the characters are but slightly related, if at all, to any of the participants in that scheme. That of Hollingsworth grew, no doubt, out of thoughts suggested by his residence among reformers as to the tendencies of all-absorbing theories of reform, though it needed a strong and narrow nature like that of Hollingsworth to exhibit them in all their force. There are many observations scattered through the book, regarding communistic life, which evidently resulted from his experience there. Miles Coverdale, who tells the story, of course represents the author in many points, if not intended as a portrait. A story told in the first person in a contemplative and analytic style like that of Hawthorne must necessarily reproduce the author to some extent in the mental structure of the narrator. Coverdale is a type of the men who do nothing because they see too much and too widely. Hollingsworth's narrowness is the great source of his power, and in the end becomes his destruction. The character of Zenobia, which is said to have some traits of Margaret Fuller, is one of the strongest ever drawn by Hawthorne, and one of the most unique in literature. Literary women have had but a slender showing in fiction, most of the portraits of them being feeble caricatures. But this one, whose literary work is secondary to her impressive personality, is the type of a class, not large, who have gone into literature because of their abounding vitality and the scarcity of outlets for it; who stand for very little to readers beyond the reach of their social influence.

Its setting is a utopian farming commune based on Brook Farm, of which Hawthorne was a founding member and where he lived in 1841. The novel dramatizes the conflict between the commune's ideals and the members' private desires and romantic rivalries. In Hawthorne (1879), Henry James called it "the lightest, the brightest, the liveliest" of Hawthorne's "unhumorous fictions," while literary critic Richard Brodhead has described it as "the darkest of Hawthorne's novels.

Book excerpt: The Blithedale Romance is Nathaniel Hawthorne's third novel, one that is sometimes overlooked by readers but is nonetheless considered one of his most critically important works. Hawthorne wrote the novel in 1851 while staying at Horace Mann's house in West Newton, Massachusetts, and published it in 1852.It is the only one of Hawthorne's novels to have a first-person narrator. Coverdale's narration has a dreamlike quality to it, leading many to label the work as a romance. One of the notable aspects of the novel is that it is based off of Hawthorne's own short-lived experience at Brook Farm, where he spent a few months in 1841 (see Additional Content). Many of the characters were based on real people, although they were not perfect likenesses. Scholars continually probe the intersection between fiction and nonfiction, attempting to ascertain what is based on Hawthorne's time at Brook Farm versus what was embellished or invented by the author.
