Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 45,000 plant and 77,000 animal species have been recorded in India and make up 7 per cent of the total plant and 6.4 per cent of the total animal species found in the world. The enormous variation of landscapes due to climate and topography has created different ecosystems that support and nurture this bio-diversity. From the majestic Himalayas in the North to the lush tropics of the South, the precious natural resources of this subcontinent are found in forest, grassland, island, coastal belt, marine, desert and semi-arid ecosystems. Industrialization and modern ways of life are pillaging these resources and posing a monumental threat to the natural world. It is estimated that as many as 50 per cent of the earth's species are likely to become extinct during the first two decades of the 21st century.

Book excerpt: The over 45,000 plant and 77,000 animal species that have been recorded in India make up 7 percent of the total plant and 6.4 percent of the animal species found in the world. The enormous variation in landscapes based on climate and topography has created different ecosystems that support and nurture this biodiversity, which is among the country's most distinctive features. It is estimated that as many as 50% of the earth's species are likely to become extinct during the next two decades. With 1,300 photographs, 400 illustrations, five animations, 21 videoclips and 26 bird calls captured in 62 of India's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, this educational CD-ROM provides an interactive experience on biodiversity answering important questions like -- How is biodiversity degraded? Why do we need to conserve it? An informative booklet provides detailed information on biodiversity and conservation in India.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how varying levels of human disturbance manifested through different management regimes influence composition, richness, diversity and abundance of key mammal, bird and plant species, even within ecologically similar habitats. Based on our results, we show the critical importance of the ‘wildlife preservation’ approach for effective biodiversity conservation. The study also provides examples of a practical application of rigorous methods of quantitative sampling of different plant and animal taxa as well as human influences, thus serving as a useful manual for protected area managers. Protected areas of various kinds have been established in India with the goal of arresting decline in, and to provide for, recovery of biodiversity and ecosystem services. A model that targets ‘wildlife preservation’ under state ownership is practiced across the country. However, forests in India are under intensive human pressure and varying levels of protection; therefore, protected areas may also experience open-access resource use, a model that is being aggressively advocated as a viable alternative to ‘preservationism’. We have evaluated the conservation efficacy of alternative forest management models by quantifying levels of biodiversity under varied levels of access, resource extraction and degree of state-sponsored protection in the Nagarahole forest landscape of southwestern India.
