Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible as English Literature This book springs from a course of study which I have offered for several years at Harvard University in the Department of English. In this course my object has been to make students as familiar as possible with the English Bible, and to throw light on its literary forms by bringing together facts from the history of its sources and from the history of the translation into English. For the latter purpose I have drawn freely on the larger results of the great school of learning which is commonly known as the Higher Criticism. This is in itself, as has often been pointed out, merely a critical study of the various books of both Old and New Testaments from the historical point of view; it arrives at its results by a faithful comparison of the various parts with each other, and by bringing to bear on them all pertinent facts from the monuments and other external sources of history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible in English Literature The subject is not casual - it is nothing incidental, nor even wholly explicit. It is implicit in the pro foundest sense - it is close to the beating of the heart, and the flowing of the blood. For we believe that English-speaking people possess the Bible in this way, not merely in outward ways and customs, but in the blood. The author can only hope that he has suc ceeded to some extent in making this clear as respects English literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible as Literature I have been requested to say a few words as preface to this little book, written by my nephew, on the Bible as literature. The title is a wide one but I think the writer is well advised in confining himself to the side of literary treatment most urgently required in the case of sacred literature, and explain ing, with as much clearness as the brief limits permit, the chief forms of literature contained in the Bible and Apocrypha. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greatest English Classic: A Study of the King James Version of the Bible and Its Influence on Life and Literature The reception accorded the lectures at the time of their public delivery, and the discussion which ensued upon some of the points raised, encourage the hope that they may be more widely useful. It is a pleasure to assign to Dr. Franklin W. Hooper, director of the Institute, whatever credit the work may merit. Certainly it would not have been undertaken without his kindly urgency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible as Literature: An Introduction For some time past there has been a growing conviction of the need of a more complete and comprehensive study of the Bible in all the colleges. Quite recently the matter has received new emphasis and practical direction. A complete course of Bible study has been outlined by a joint committee representing the Eastern and Western sections of the Association of College Instructors in the Bible, the departments of colleges and universities and of teacher training of the Religious Education Association, the Student Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A., and Sunday School Council. The proposed curriculum is not merely a theoretical outline but has already been tested, in part, at some of the leading colleges of the country. The complete course will include the following books: "Old Testament History," by Prof. Ismar J. Peritz, of Syracuse University; "New Testament History," by Dr. Harris Franklin Rail, President of Iliff School of Theology; "The Bible as Literature," by Prof. Irving F. Wood and Prof. Elihu Grant, of Smith College; "Social Institutions and Ideals of the Bible," by Prof. Theodore G. Soares, University of Chicago; and "The History, Principles and Methods of Religious Education," by Prof. F. H. Swift, University of Minnesota. The publishers take pleasure in announcing that the volumes on New Testament History and The Bible as Literature are now ready. Professor Peritz's volume on Old Testament History will be published in time for use during the second half of the college year 1914-1915, and the remaining volumes by Professors Soares and Swift in time for the opening of the 1915-1916 college year. These books have been prepared with a view to the requirements of the college course and the needs of the student. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book About the English Bible Tms volume is simply what its title indicates, A Book about the English Bible. It has grown out of a series of lectures delivered to students in the University of Pennsylvania, the purpose of which was to give a brief account of the English Bible, its immediate sources and their contents, their literary background and surroundings, the forms and characteristics of the constituent books and their relation to each other. To the chapters, in which these subjects are suggested, rather than discussed, have been added several others containing a short history of the translation of the Bible into English, from Saxon times to our own day. Attention is called to the differences between the commonly used English versions as regards contents and translation, and to the reasons for the differences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Bible It is the Opinion of those especially interested in the study of the English Bible that there is at present something of an awakened interest in the subject. In some of our colleges credit is given for systematic work done in the Sunday school. In many institutions courses are given in biblical literature where the sub ject is presented in its historical development. There are a number of textbooks which cover this ground in a satisfactory manner. This book recognizes at the outset the existing condition that the great majority of our young people are lacking in a proper knowledge of the Bible itself. About half of the work, therefore, is devoted to a direct study of the narratives in order to supply a foundation for the literary study with Which the other half is concerned. It is, hoped that it may be useful to students in schools, colleges, and Sunday schools; and to divinity students who may need to extend their knowledge of the Bible in this direction.
