Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of the Marne Having been privileged to watch the war in France from beginning to end, and to live with the French armies (as Correspondent attached to General Head quarters) for more than two years, the writer has also had exceptional opportunities of studying the terrain, and of discussing the drama as a whole and in detail with officers and men from the highest to the most humble. To name all those from whom he has re ceived aid would be impossible; to name any might seem to associate them with conclusions for which he is solely responsible; but he may record his deep gratitude to the French Government, the Headquarters Staff, and the various Army Staffs, for the rare experi ence of which this volume is unworthy fruit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marne Battle-Fields (1914) For the benefit of tourists who wish to visit the battle-fields and mutilated towns of France we have tried to produce a work combining a practical guide and a history. Such a visit should be a pilgrimage, not merely a journey across the ravaged land. Seeing is not enough, one must understand; a ruin is more moving when one knows what has caused it; a stretch of country which might seem dull and uninteresting to the unenlightened eye, becomes transformed at the thought of the battles which have raged there. We have therefore prefaced the description of our journeys by a short account of the events which took place on the ground covered by this guide, and we have done our best to make this account quite clear by the use of many illustrations and maps. In the course of the description we give a brief military commentary on the numerous views and panoramas contained in the book. When we come across a place that is interesting either from an archaeological or an artistic point of view, there we halt, even though the war has passed it by, that the tourist may realise that it was to preserve this heritage of history and beauty intact, that so many of our heroes have fallen. Our readers will not find any attempt at literary effect in these pages; the truth is too beautiful and tragic to be altered for the sake of embellishing the story; we have therefore carefully sifted the great volume of evidence available, and selected only that obtained from official documents or reliable eye-witnesses. This book appears before the end of the war, but the country over which it leads the reader has long been freed. The wealth of illustration in this work allows the intending tourist to make a preliminary trip in imagination, until such time as circumstances permit of his undertaking the journey in reality, beneath the sunny skies of France. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turn of the Tide, American Operations at Cantigny, Château Thierry, and the Second Battle of the Marne In justice to our gallant and indomitable Allies who bore the brunt of the War and denied the Central Allies the ultimate victory while we'were preparing to assist in attaining it, I have been careful to avoid the all too common error of overrating our physical contribution to the result. However great the moral effect of our participation in the fighting on the Marne may have been, and it is hard to overestimate that effect, the time has come when in justice to ourselves as well as to our Allies we should view the events of the War sanely, and endeavor to see them in their true perspective. Surely the truth is glorious enough, and there is no cause for our pride to suffer at its telling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marne Campaign For years before the outbreak of the European war, a war which had been foreseen by all soldiers who were acquainted with the preparations being made for it in. Germany and, to a less extent, elsewhere on the Continent, military experts had been discussing the administrative problems which the handling of the huge armies of the present day must create. It was asserted in some quarters that the staffs concerned would find it impracticable to man uvre, these colossal bodies of men when the issue came to be put to the test, that swift transfers of force over a wide extent of country were no longer feasible, and that the very size. of the armies employed must henceforward militate against the development of vertebrate and decisive operations of war. These anticipations were not borne out by the events I with which this volume deals. Whatever the experiences of the contending sides may have been subsequent to the, contest of the Marne, the course of operations in Belgium and France up to, and including, that memorable struggle, serves to belie the theory that the vast numbers which are placed in the field to-day necessarily forbid the carrying out of strategical combinations hinging on mobility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marne: A Tale of the War Ever since the age of six Troy Belknap of New York had embarked for Europe every June on the fastest steamer of one or another of the most expensive lines. With his family he had descended at the dock from a large noiseless motor, had kissed his father good-bye, turned back to shake hands with the chauffeur (a particular friend), and trotted up the gang-plank behind his mother's maid, while one welcoming steward captured Mrs. Belknap's bag, and another led away her miniature French bull-dog - also a particular friend of Troy's. From that hour all had been delight. For six golden days Troy had ranged the decks, Splashed in the blue salt water brimming his huge porcelain tub, lunched and dined with the grown-ups in the Ritz restaurant, and swaggered about in front of the children who had never crossed before, and didn't know the stewards, or the purser, or the captain's cat, or on which deck you might exercise your dog, or how to induce the officer on the watch to let you scramble up for a minute to the bridge. Then, when these joys began to pall, he had lost himself in others deeper and dearer. Another of his cronies, the library steward, had nu locked the book-case doors for him, and, buried for hours in the depths of a huge library armchair (there weren't any to compare with it on land), he had ranged through the length and breadth of several literatures. These six days of bliss would have been too soon over if they had not been the mere prelude to intenser sensations. On the seventh morning - generally at Cherbourg - Troy Belknap followed his mother, and his mother's maid, and the French bull, up the gang-plank and into another large noiseless motor, with another chauffeur (french, this one) to whom he was also deeply attached, and who sat grinning and cap-touching at the wheel. And then - ih a few minutes, so swiftly and smilingly was the way of Mrs. Belknap smoothed the noiseless motor was off, and they were rushing eastward through the orchards of Normandy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genius of the Marne: A Play in Three Scenes Marne but yesterday's glory! Be this as it may it did not surprise me that in long brooding he had dis covered a symbol, a synthesis, an interpretation of the genius that brought about the victory. The mystery of genius has always occupied the mind of man, and the play for which I have been asked to contribute a few lines of introduction is, at least I take it to be, Mr. Balderston's explanation of the inspired tactics of the retreat that led up to the Battle of the Marne. The play contains one scene truly original, one which remains in my mind and will, I think, always remain in the mind of the reader the scene in which Napoleon appears at the crit ical moment and dictates to the sleeping general the plan of the battle. Joff're seems to have had the plan of the Battle Of the Marne in his mind all the while from Charleroi to the Marne, but it seemed to refuse to take precise shape. The sleep-walking scene, as it appears to me, is admirably introduced by an argument between the General and his staff each general in turn presses the necessity of a de cision on Joff're; a decision must be taken, and at once. But think, reader, what this decision involved whether Paris was to be destroyed and the retreat continued to the Loire, or whether the world's destiny was to be decided at the Marne. In the middle of the night an exhausted general is called upon to decide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
