Book excerpt: For over 20 years Berlin-based photographer and filmmaker Armin Linke (b. 1966) has been photographing the effects of globalization, the transformation of infrastructures and the networking of post-industrial society via digital information and communication technologies. Following his recent exhibition in Milan, this substantial publication features images selected by a variety of theorists and scientists chosen by Linke. The images selected by Israeli theorist, curator and filmmaker Ariella Azoulay, French sociologist and philosopher Bruno Latour, Austrian artist/curator/media theorist Peter Weibel, American architectural theorist Mark Wigley, and British geologist Jan Zalasiewicz open up Linkes work to a variety of new readings. Linkes photographs depict the modern world as a massive profusion of data, where the material infrastructures, consisting of computer centers, data highways and server rooms, are largely invisible. A research affiliate at the MIT Visual Arts Program, Linke has exhibited extensively worldwide including the Storefront, NY, and KW Berlin.

Book excerpt: Contextualism, the view that the epistemic standards a subject must meet in order for a claim attributing "knowledge" to her to be true do vary with context, has been hotly debated in epistemology and philosophy of language during the last few decades. This volume presents, develops, and defends contextualist solutions to two of the stickiest problems in epistemology: the puzzles of skeptical hypotheses and of lotteries. It is argued that, at least by ordinary standards for knowledge, we do know that skeptical hypotheses are false, and that we've lost the lottery. Why it seems that we don't know that they're false tells us a lot, both about what knowledge is and how knowledge attributions work. The Appearance of Ignorance is the companion volume to Keith DeRose's 2009 title The Case for Contextualism: Knowledge, Skepticism, and Context, Volume 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the centenary of Rudolf Steiner's first proclamation of Christ's appearance in the etheric realm of the Earth, this book discusses various aspects of that event that had not previously been addressed adequately. Sergei Prokofieff points to three themes of primary importance, all of which are connected directly with the tasks of the Society that Rudolf Steiner founded: The preparation of humankind for the Second Coming Working with Christ as the Lord of Karma Recognizing in Anthroposophy the spiritual language through which questions can be posed to the etheric Christ today Prokofieff describes these and other critical undertakings, such as forging a strong relationship with Michael and the importance of recognizing the adversarial forces attempting to falsify Christ's Second Coming. The Appearance of Christ in the Etheric is of relevance to every individual who wishes to take an active role in fulfilling the needs of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985 this book explores, in four interwoven essays, the many ways human life and built form interact and the place that professional designing takes in this interaction. Together, the essays touch on a number of ideas: the idea that our position in space relative to the thing we are designing determines the methods we apply when designing it; the idea that designing is about making proposals, and is therefore a social act first of all; and the idea that agreements, consensus and above all conventions shape the act of designing things independent of their creative qualities.
