Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anarchist Constitution It is safe to say that governments have committed far more crimes than they have prevented. - Robert Ingersoll. Equity, thus depending, essentially, upon the particular circumstances of each individual case, there can be no established rules and fixed precepts of equity laid down, without destroying its very essence. And, on the other hand, the liberty of considering all cases in an equitable light must not be indulged too far lest thereby we destroy all law. And law without equity, though hard and disagreeable (you bet it is) is much more desirable for the public good (he meant by the public good the welfare of the lawyers) than equity without law. - Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England, 62, Book I, Page 42. And thus, by this strict construction of the courts of law, a statute made upon great at deliberation. and introduced in the most solemn manner, has had little other effect than to make a slight alteration in the formal words of a conveyance. - Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. 336, Book II, Page 271. Heredity is the idea of a man being some one else in a previous existence and then using it to be himself later. - Dinkelspiel's Review. Was any political party ever held accountable for a political murder such as the murder of Governor Goebel of Kentucky, by the conspiracy of Republican politicians, or any religion held accountable for a religious murder such as the murder of President Garfield by a Christian enthusiast (or fanatic, if you please)? Why, then, should anarchists be held accountable for the first murder by an anarchist in the United States? Was not McKinley's assassination the first one by an anarchist in the United States? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Legislative Conspiracy in Kansas: Court Vs Constitution; Who Are the Anarchists? Shortly after the adjournment of the last legislature in this state, Rev. Pearse Pinch, pastor of the most wealthy and aristo cratic church in this city, Emporia, had an article in the New York Voice on the Kansas Legislative muddle, written to es tablish his declaration that The Republicans should have the credit of standing for law against revolution and anarchy This cheap bandinage, by no means original with the reverend gentleman, failed to expand under his treatment to any thing more important than a mere postulate; and while I failed to see the t he said any thing of consequence, my respect for the dig nity.of the Christian ministry, as well as the belief which I eu tertain that the subject is of overshadowmg and almost unspeak able importance to every part of this great nation, has prompted me to write about it. I am unable to dispose, of the long lesson in politics which the Kansas people have learned in the school of experience during the past few months as deftly and briefly as he did, but, if the reader will grant me a candid hearing throughout what I have to say, I will gladly submit to his judgment Whether his time and patience have been adequately compensated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Constitution IT is a thrilling story, the tale Of four million people deliberately choosing a form Of government for themselves and promising to live in Obedience to its laws. It is a story Of dreaming Of union, but dreading to be bound; Of dreaming Of separation, but fearing to be free; a story of peering into the future like the seers Of Old, and Of balancing sordid advantages and disadvantages like the most penurious Of misers. And what Of that noble group of men, unconsciously great, who without a thought Of their Own gain moved quietly about the task of saving a nation from lawlessness and anarchy? Why is it that histories which are elsewhere interesting become SO Often dry and dull when the Wonder-story is touched upon? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Constitution of the United States The story of the Constitution is of truth stranger than fie tion. It is natural to attribute to an institution throughout its history that reputation which it bears in our own day. Many men are yet living who remember with startling dis tinctness a time when the Constitution seemed merely a piece of parchment; when the fate of the nation was as uncertain as the course of battle; when stern necessity compelled so liberal an interpretation of the supreme law of the land that states men refrained from forming conclusions on the tendency Of national administration, and, looking hopefully forward, sought new meanings in events where before they had sought interpretation by a construction Of words. Then, and not till then, in our history was the Constitution of the United States understood in its spirit as being the expression of the nation's mind, Whatever that mind might be. But no man now living can remember the angry days when the Constitu tion was yet a hope or a proposition debated between jealous States and still more jealous political leaders. NO one can re member the living opinions which, at the close of the eight eenth century, so nearly triumphed, and whose triumph would have dissolved a feeble union of States and encouraged the horrors of an anarchy only possible in a democracy. When the Opinions on national government in America to-day and opinions Of a century ago are contrasted, it is difficult to be lieve that we are the children of our fathers. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of the Judgment: A Review of the Anarchist Case The pamphlet entitled "Was It a Fair Trial," published just before the execution of the so-called anarchists, had such a wide circulation, and excited so much interest, that after the execution a strong desire was expressed by many persons that the pamphlet be enlarged into a review of the whole case as a test of American democracy. It was desired that as the former pamphlet was written under the conditions prevailing before the execution, in the shape of an appeal to the governor for clemency, this one should be written under the conditions that prevailed after the execution in the shape of an appeal to the bar and people of Illinois for a reversal of the judgment and a restoration of the law. The awful tragedy in the Haymarket was "worked" in such an ingenious way that the American people were thrown into a state of terror as if their government and their constitution were made of brittle glass. Taking advantage of this panic, the law was strangled in the courts that the accused anarchists might be strangled on the gallows. Working the people into a nervous state of mind, authority asserted itself like a king, and, borrowing from Lord Salisbury his "coercion" policy for Ireland, adopted it in Chicago, with this difference, that whereas the prime minister of England did not dare to enforce his policy without special warrant of the legislature, his imitators in Chicago enforced it without waiting for any legal permission at all. In the trial of the anarchists a great wrong was done, not only to them and their families, but to all the people, whose lives, property and liberties can never be safe where the guarantees of the constitution are disregarded by the courts and the right of trial by a fair and impartial jury is denied. That the wrong done in the anarchist trial and judgment may be righted as far as possible, and that a like wrong may never again be done in the United States, this review is written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Federalist, on the New Constitution, Written in the Year 1788 In this collection, the Act of Confederation and the Constitution of the United States also find an appropriate place. They are the textaupen-which the Federalist is a commentary. By comparing these two national constitutions, and reflecting upon the results of each, the defects of the former and the perfections of the latter will be easily perceived; and the American people may be thence in structed, that however prudence may dictate the necessity of caution in admitting innovations upon established institutions, yet that it is at all times advisable to listen with attention to the suggestions and prepositions, of temperate and experienced statesmen, for the cure of political evils and the promotion of the general welfare.
