Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A warm and surprisingly real-life biography, featuring never-before-seen photos, of one of rock’s greatest talents: Prince. Neal Karlen was the only journalist Prince granted in-depth press interviews to for over a dozen years, from before Purple Rain to when the artist changed his name to an unpronounceable glyph. Karlen interviewed Prince for three Rolling Stone cover stories, wrote “3 Chains o’ Gold,” Prince’s “rock video opera,” as well as the star’s last testament, which may be buried with Prince’s will underneath Prince’s vast and private compound, Paisley Park. According to Prince's former fiancée Susannah Melvoin, Karlen was “the only reporter who made Prince sound like what he really sounded like.” Karlen quit writing about Prince a quarter-century before the mega-star died, but he never quit Prince, and the two remained friends for the last thirty-one years of the superstar’s life. Well before they met as writer and subject, Prince and Karlen knew each other as two of the gang of kids who biked around Minneapolis’s mostly-segregated Northside. (They played basketball at the Dairy Queen next door to Karlen’s grandparents, two blocks from the budding musician.) He asserts that Prince can’t be understood without first understanding ‘70s Minneapolis, and that even Prince’s best friends knew only 15 percent of him: that was all he was willing and able to give, no matter how much he cared for them. Going back to Prince Rogers Nelson's roots, especially his contradictory, often tortured, and sometimes violent relationship with his father, This Thing Called Life profoundly changes what we know about Prince, and explains him as no biography has: a superstar who calls in the middle of the night to talk, who loved The Wire and could quote from every episode of The Office, who frequented libraries and jammed spontaneously for local crowds (and fed everyone pancakes afterward), who was lonely but craved being alone. Readers will drive around Minneapolis with Prince in a convertible, talk about movies and music and life, and watch as he tries not to curse, instead dishing a healthy dose of “mamma jammas.”

Book excerpt: Talking about money sucks; but so does being broke. Do your eyes glaze over just thinking about the mumbo-jumbo of finance? Do you break out into hives at the thought of money? Well, sister, you are not alone. In RICH BITCH, money expert and financial journalist Nicole Lapin lays out a 12-Step Plan in which she shares her experiences, mistakes and all, of getting her own finances in order. No lecturing, just help from a friend. And even though money is typically an off-limits conversation, nothing is off-limits here. Lapin rethinks every piece of financial wisdom you've ever heard and puts her own fresh, modern, sassy spin on it. Sure, there are some hard-and-fast rules about finance, but when it comes to your money, the only person who can spend it is you. Should you invest in a 401(k)? Maybe not. Should you splurge on that morning latte? Likely yes. Instead of nickel-and-diming yourself, Nicole's advice focuses on investing in yourself so you don't have to stress over the little things. But in order to do that, you have to be able to speak the language of money. After all, money is a language like anything else, and the sooner you can join the conversation, the sooner you can live the life you want, RICH BITCH rehabs whatever bad habits you might have and provides a plan you can not only sustain, but thrive with. It's time to go after the rich life you deserve, and confident enough to call yourself a RICH BITCH.

Book excerpt: A smart, engaging investigation of the show that brought real teens to TV My So-Called Life lasted only 19 episodes from 1994 to 1995, but in that time it earned many devoted viewers, including the showrunners who would usher in the teen TV boom of the late '90s and the new millennium. With its focus on 15-year-old Angela Chase's search for her identity, MSCL's realistic representation of adolescence on TV was groundbreaking; without her there would be no Buffy or Felicity, Rory Gilmore or Veronica Mars. The series' broadcast coincided with the arrival of third-wave feminism, the first feminist movement to make teen voices a priority, and Angela became their small-screen spokesperson. From her perspective, MSCL explored gender, identity, sexuality, race, class, body image, and other issues vital to the third wave (and the world). To this day, passionate fans dissect everything from what Rickie Vasquez did for gay representation to what Jordan Catalano did for leaning, and Soraya Roberts makes an invaluable contribution to that conversation with In My Humble Opinion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For twenty-five years she was a corporate bitch, and now has shifted from bitch to rich! “Do you have any idea how hurtful you are to people?” Linda asked. She shook her head and did everything she could to avoid eye contact with me. I looked across the room at Sheila, searching for some validation of what Linda had said. All I could see was her slumped in her chair, sitting silently as Brian talked in her ear. As a young woman, Bernadette Boas was anything but a bitch. Raised by loving, Irish Catholic parents in a Philadelphia suburb in the 1960’s, she was the middle child of twelve--a sassy, precocious girl with big dreams of a big life. At the age of eighteen, Bernadette left home with the love and support of her family and headed South to Boca Raton, Florida, where she began to climb the corporate ladder. There, amidst palm trees and sandy beaches, the sun began to set on her once glowing personality. A driven, ambitious young woman, Bernadette began to emulate the negative, competitive attitudes of her coworkers--men and women--in her quest for success. She gained a reputation for being aggressive, demanding, and brash. Through hard work and perseverance, she attained tremendous success and achievement through managerial and executive positions, but it came with a price. Eventually, she lost her six-figure corporate job and her bitch persona. "Shedding the Corporate Bitch" is one woman’s real-life admission of what it’s like to sell one’s soul in exchange for ambition, greed and power at home and in the workplace. Its one woman’s apology to all the people she hurt over the years in pursuit of those goals. But most importantly, it’s her lessons, tips, and advice for aspiring corporate women who erroneously believe that ‘manning up’ and becoming a bitch in order to achieve career success that is valuable.

Book excerpt: A Journey Called Life is Gladys' story from birth to retirement. She discusses the following challenges during her life: her speech defect, loss of her first child, becoming a teacher, her son's involvement with drugs, her Mom's Alzheimer's, and her daughter's brain surgery. Before the death of her first child, she believed God planned and controlled everything in one's life. However, to her God is loving and caring not a punishing God or one to fear. Why would God take her first baby away from her when he was just two weeks old. After much grieving and soul searching, she changed her philosophy to although God is all powerful, he chooses not to use that power to interfere with nature. God might have a plan for your life. However, everything that happens to you is not God's plan or fault for he allows nature to exist as he created the world. In other words, illnesses and health problems are just a part of our world. God created a beautiful world but it is not perfect because God made people human not perfect. However, God is always there to help you through difficult times. Wiley's children invovement with drugs introduced her to Al-Anon. There she learned that worry is optional and one can experience negativity or anger without becoming negative or angry. She discovered that detachment is not caring less but caring more for your own serenity. She found out that no situation is too difficult to be bettered or any problem too great to be lessened. Wiley also writes about her travels to Virgin Islands, Tahiti, Hawaii, out West, and Alaska. Journaling has become very important to Wiley. She includes ponder questions at the end of each chapter to challenge her readers to think about the meaning of life, journal about their own lives, and grow as individuals.
