Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Astronomy This volume, both in respect to matter and arrangement, is designed especially for the use of the cadets of the U. S. Military Academy, as a supplement to the course in General Astronomy at present taught them from the text-book of Professor 0. A. Young. It is therefore limited to that branch of Practical Astronomy which relates to Field Work, and more particularly to those subjects which are not discussed at sufficient length for practical work in Professor Young's volume. It is believed, however, that it will find a use ful application in the hands of Officers Of the Army, who may be called upon to conduct such explorations and surveys for military purposes as the War Department may from time to time direct. The more usual methods of determining Time, Latitude, and Longitude, on Land, are explained, and the requisite. Reduction formulas are deduced and explained. In addition, there is given a short explanation Of the principles relating to the Construction Of Ephemerides, to the Figure of the Earth, the determination of Azimuths, and the projection of Solar Eclipses. The instruments described are those used by the cadets in the Field and Permanent Observatories of the Military Academy dur ing the summer encampment. Care has been taken to secure accuracy in the text as well as in the examples, but a considerable number of errors have already been noted. For these the reader is referred to the list of errata on page 132. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Field Astronomy for Engineers The present work is not designed for professional students of astronomy, but for another and larger class found in technical colleges. For many years it has been the author' s duty to teach to students of engineering the elements of practical astronomy, and the experience thus acquired has gradually produced the unconventional views that find expression in the present text and which, to the author's mind, are justified by the following considerations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Spherical and Practical Astronomy The plan of the work embraces only those practical methods which can be carried out by the use of portable instruments. The fact that it is primarily intended for use in the class-room, and not for field use, will explain the omission of many details connected with the making of observations, which, while important, can only be learned by the actual handling of instruments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uranography and Practical Astronomy: Designed for Private Students The practical astronomy contains rules for calculating the moon's phases, eclipses, Easter, &c., &c. -too tedious to mention. The practical astronomy must be studied as a text book; therefore, the reader need not expect to open it, and then apply the rules to the various examples but must resort to the more elaborate method of study and inspection. In hope that this compilation may be found useful, we submit it to the public for self-recommendation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Spherical and Practical Astronomy A method of reduction which is the same for both types of level, and which is in most cases more convenient than the above, is as follows: In the square array of numbers which constitute the observed readings of the level, take the diagonal differences. The mean of the two diagonal differences is the inclination of the line in half divisions of the level. That end of the line is the higher which is ad jacent to the greatest single reading. If the level readings have been correctly made the two diagonal differences will be the same, and the reduction thus serves as a check upon the accuracy of the record. Thus, from the readings given above, we see at a glance that in the first case 2 half divisions and the readings have been correctly made. In the second case z half divisions and there is a discrepancy of div. In the readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
