Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teutonic Etymology: The Formation of Teutonic Words in the English Language It is often remarked, especially by foreign writers, that the English language needs a more scientific treatment than it has ever yet received. It is generally acknowledged, even by our own writers, that the Teutonic side of our language has been greatly neglected. Yet the Teutonic is the basis, or substantial portion of our language, and cannot be neglected without great detriment. A thorough scientific treatment of the English language would require a great change in the helps now employed for the study of English, and would not readily find admission into our seats of learning. In the mean time, the discussions concerning our dictionaries, the private reading of Bopp's Comparative Grammar, translated by Eastwick, 1845-1850, Donaldson's New Cratylus and Varronianus, which have just come to new editions, Trench's various works, 1853-1859, Rev. B. W. Dwight's Modern Philology, 1859, G. P. Marsh's Lectures on English Philology, 1860, and similar works, are preparing the way for a more enlightened view of the structure of the English language. The same object may also be promoted by judicious monographs, on special topics of grammar, adapted to the recitation room, which should introduce some of the results of modern philology, and at the same time silently correct the careless statements of our common grammars. Of this nature is the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As all lovers of language know, words are the source of our very understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Often, however, our use of language is so automatic that we neglect to consider where those words came from and what they assume. What are the implications, beyond the simple dictionary definitions, of using words such as privilege, hysteria, seminal, and gyp? Browsing through the pages of The Barhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology is like exploring the historical, political, and rhetorical wonderland of our linguistic heritage. We see the evolution of ideas, as rootword connections that now seem arbitrary are traced to schools of thought from the past. We also find an opportunity to examine how the sometimes backwards, sometimes hilarious, and sometimes illuminating ideologies built into our language affect our modern thinking. Written in a fresh, accessible style, this book provides the derivations of over 21,000 English-language words without resorting to the use of abbreviations, symbols, or technical terminology. Drawing on the most current American scholarship, and focusing on the core words in contemporary English, The Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology is both a diverting browse and a thinking person's Bible.
