Book excerpt: On the plains between the San Antonio River and the Rio Grande lies the heartland of what is perhaps the largest ethnic region in the United States, Tejano South Texas. In this cultural geography, Daniel Arreola charts the many ways in which Texans of Mexican ancestry have established a cultural province in this Texas-Mexico borderland that is unlike any other Mexican American region. Arreola begins by delineating South Texas as an environmental and cultural region. He then explores who the Tejanos are, where in Mexico they originated, and how and where they settled historically in South Texas. When the Civil War erupted in 1861, Basilio was one of only two Tejanos in the state legislature. During Santos’s lifetime, five flags flew over the small community he called home—that of the Republic of Mexico, the ill-fated Republic of the Rio Grande, the Republic of Texas, an expansionist United States, and in March 1861, the rebellious Confederate States of America. Tejano Experience is a case study in Spanish-American and Mexican-American genealogy which resulted from the author's efforts to learn more about himself, his family, and his fellow Tejanos. It tells the stories of his maternal grandfather, Celestino Olivares Garza and his extended Garza and Olivares Families, by embellishing their stories with historical context. Having received land grants from Spanish Royalty on both sides of the Rio Grande River in the 18th Century, these families were some of the earliest pioneers and settlers of South Texas before the American Revolution ever happened. Many of the descendants of these families have resided in deep South Texas for over 140 years and remain there to this very day!Although the subject matter of this book is primarily genealogical in nature, it also offers an introductory glimpse into the history of South Texas and how its Tejano residents lived through and adapted to the challenges and changes that have occurred in this part of Texas over time. Furthermore, the stories of the families in this book are very representative of thousands of other Tejano family stories from South Texas. The author hopes that these stories will inspire others to discover more about (and record) their own respective family histories, and that this work might serve as a "how to" book for those desiring to do so.

During this migration of people, labor, and ideas, Tejanos established settlements in nearly all the places they traveled to for work, influencing concepts of Mexican Americanism in Texas, California, Wisconsin, Michigan, and elsewhere. In The Tejano Diaspora, Marc Simon Rodriguez examines how Chicano political and social movements developed at both ends of the migratory labor network that flowed between Crystal City, Texas, and Wisconsin during this period. Rodriguez argues that translocal Mexican American activism gained ground as young people, activists, and politicians united across the migrant stream. Crystal City, well known as a flash point of 1960s-era Mexican Americanism, was a classic migrant sending community, with over 80 percent of the population migrating each year in pursuit of farm work. Wisconsin, which had a long tradition of progressive labor politics, provided a testing ground for activism and ideas for young movement leaders. By providing a view of the Chicano movement beyond the Southwest, Rodriguez reveals an emergent ethnic identity, discovers an overlooked youth movement, and interrogates the meanings of American citizenship.
