Book excerpt: A strong and fluent competency in mathematics is a necessary condition for scientific, technological and economic progress. However, it is widely recognized that problem solving, reasoning, and thinking processes are critical areas in which students' performance lags far behind what should be expected and desired. Mathematics is indeed an important subject, but is also important to be able to use it in extra-mathematical contexts. Thinking strictly in terms of mathematics or thinking in terms of its relations with the real world involve quite different processes and issues. This book includes the revised papers presented at the NATO ARW "Information Technology and Mathematical Problem Solving Research", held in April 1991, in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, which focused on the implications of computerized learning environments and cognitive psychology research for these mathematical activities. In recent years, several committees, professional associations, and distinguished individuals throughout the world have put forward proposals to renew mathematics curricula, all emphasizing the importance of problem solving. In order to be successful, these reforming intentions require a theory-driven research base. But mathematics problem solving may be considered a "chaotic field" in which progress has been quite slow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics combines the latest developments in research, standards, and technology with a vibrant writing style to help teachers prepare for the excitement and challenges of teaching secondary and middle school mathematics today. In the fully revised fifth edition, scholar and mathematics educator Daniel Brahier invites teachers to investigate the nature of the mathematics curriculum and reflect on research-based "best practices" as they define and sharpen their own personal teaching styles. The fifth edition has been updated and expanded with a particular emphasis on the continued impact of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and NCTM’s just-released Principles to Actions, as well as increased attention to teaching with technology, classroom management, and differentiated instruction. Features include: A full new Chapter 7 on selection and use of specific tools and technology combined with "Spotlight on Technology" features throughout clearly illustrate the practical aspects of how technology can be used for teaching or professional development. Foundational Chapters 1 and 2 on the practices and principles of mathematics education have been revised to build directly on Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and Principles to Actions, with additional references to both documents throughout all chapters. A new Chapter 4 focuses on the use of standards in writing objectives and organizing lesson plan resources while an updated Chapter 5 details each step of the lesson planning process. A fully revised Chapter 12 provides new information on teaching diverse populations and outlines specific details and suggestions for classroom management for mathematics teachers. Classroom Dialogues" features draws on the author’s 35-year experience as an educator to present real-world teacher-student conversations about specific mathematical problems or ideas "How Would You React?" features prepares future teachers for real-life scenarios by engaging them in common classroom situations and offering tried-and-true solutions. With more than 60 practical, classroom-tested teaching ideas, sample lesson and activities, Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics combines the best of theory and practice to provide clear descriptions of what it takes to be an effective teacher of mathematics.

This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 1380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The audience remains much the same as for the 1992 Handbook, namely, mathematics education researchers and other scholars conducting work in mathematics education. This group includes college and university faculty, graduate students, investigators in research and development centers, and staff members at federal, state, and local agencies that conduct and use research within the discipline of mathematics. The intent of the authors of this volume is to provide useful perspectives as well as pertinent information for conducting investigations that are informed by previous work. The Handbook should also be a useful textbook for graduate research seminars. In addition to the audience mentioned above, the present Handbook contains chapters that should be relevant to four other groups: teacher educators, curriculum developers, state and national policy makers, and test developers and others involved with assessment. Taken as a whole, the chapters reflects the mathematics education research community's willingness to accept the challenge of helping the public understand what mathematics education research is all about and what the relevance of their research fi ndings might be for those outside their immediate community.

This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALAN 1. BISHOP The first International Handbook on Mathematics Education was published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in 1996. However, most of the writing for that handbook was done in 1995 and generally reflected the main research and development foci prior to 1994. There were four sections, 36 chapters, and some 150 people contributed to the final volume either as author, reviewer, editor, or critical friend. The task was a monumental one, attempting to cover the major research and practice developments in the international field of mathematics education as it appeared to the contributors in 1995. Inevitably there were certain omissions, some developments were only starting to emerge, and some literatures were only sketchy and speculative. However that Handbook has had to be reprinted three times, so it clearly fulfilled a need and I personally hope that it lived up to what I wrote in its Introduction: The Handbook thus attempts not merely to present a description of the international 'state-of-the-field', but also to offer synthetic and reflective overviews on the different directions being taken by the field, on the gaps existing in our present knowledge, on the current problems being faced, and on the future possibilities for development. (Bishop et aI. , 1996) Since that time there has been even more activity in our field, and now seems a good time to take stock again, to reflect on what has happened since 1995, and to create a second Handbook with the same overall goals.
