Book excerpt: How do YOU react when you see a homeless person? Your answer may change after you read this novel. Travel along with with Japhy Righter, a 34-year old homeless alcoholic, who now finds himself living on the streets of River City, where the City Council is trying to shut down programs that are striving to help homeless people. At the same time, there’s a serial murderer on the loose in River City―who is preying on its homeless residents. Follow Japhy, his companions, and the other citizens of River City on a journey of hardship, and regret; and yet, ultimately: hope… “I saw more and more homeless people, walking the same path. To me, we looked like tattered pilgrims, making our way to a shrine after a long, arduous journey―only without the promise of blessedness.” —(From the Introduction) The author’s earlier novel, Work, Death & Taxes, is an apocalyptic murder mystery of the near future that asks the question, “What would it be like if your JOB became your LIFE?” He is currently working on a non-fiction book.

Book excerpt: In the fourteenth century, the Roman Catholic Church reigned supreme in England. The first break from the Church occurred in the early 1500s when King Henry VII wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine. The King's break with the Roman Catholic Church created the Anglican Church (Church of England) which, though not entirely Protestant, nonetheless allowed a revival of Protestantism. Many of these Protestants were called Puritans "because of their wish to purify and reform the State Church." Religious persecution continued through the 1600s, however, for any group that varied too far from the teachings of the Church of England. The Pilgrims evolved from the Puritans. The author endeavors "to make plain something of the exalted character of the men and women whom preeminently the world has agreed to call the Pilgrims...." who "maintained steadily their lofty intellectual, moral, and religious standards and soon exerted an enlightening influence upon the world out of all proportion to the smallness of their colony." This informative and readable history includes biographical sketches of Robert Browne, William Brewster, William Bradford, and John Robinson, as well as many notes on lesser known but nonetheless important early Pilgrims. The Pilgrim towns of Scrooby and Austerfield in England are described in detail, as is the now-famous Plymouth Colony of 1620 in Massachusetts. The author describes the colony in detail, devoting chapters to its early life, commercial history, and first year of existence. This book was originally printed as a series of weekly articles in 1893 for members of the Scrooby Clubs, a nationwide collection of individuals associated with the Congregational Church. (1894, 1990), 2022, 51/2x81/2, paper, index, 386 pp.

Book excerpt: A Quest for Freedom All Americans are familiar with the story of the Pilgrims—persecuted for their religion in the Old World, they crossed the ocean to settle in a wild and dangerous land. But for most of us, the story ends after their brutal first winter at Plymouth with a supposedly peaceful encounter with the Native Americans and a happy Thanksgiving. Now, through the vivid memoirs, letters, and personal accounts in The Pilgrim Chronicles, you will discover the full, compelling story of their anguished journey and heroic strength. Award-winning historian Rod Gragg brings the Pilgrims to life in this lavishly illustrated guide, filled with moving, eyewitness narratives. From their persecution in England and painful exile in Holland to their voyage across the Atlantic and their struggle to survive among the Indians in an untamed wilderness, Gragg takes you on the harrowing and inspiring journey of a people seeking religious freedom.
