Book excerpt: Tapas Shakti is the spiritual power of a Self realized yogi attained through meditation in the state of consciousness called samadhi or enlightenment. In samadhi, the person is in bliss and no longer aware of time or the body. Shri Shri Shri Shivabalayogi Maharaj spontaneously entered samadhi at age fourteen. He meditated in samadhi 23 hours each day for eight years, then at least 12 hours daily for another four years. At times he remained in samadhi for weeks or months without interruption. He completed his twelve-year tapas on August 7, 1961. This book contains a rare and detailed account of a yogi's tapas together with Shivabalayogi's biography, his conversations on a wide variety of subjects, and personal experiences of some of the many thousands of lives Shivabalayogi has transformed. This edition is a reprint of the original 1992 publication.

Teachings of Sri Sivabala Yogi contained in Laghu Guru Upanishad are especially relevant for such people. There are many grades of aspirants; some just want to lead a peaceful life, some want a lower type of salvation and a few blessed ones who desire total freedom by realising their true natures. Ultimate liberation is attained only if one knows the absolute Self (or Reality or God). No matter what ones goal is, the Gurus teaching given in Laghu Guru Upanishad, if practised sincerely, offers hope to everyone to attain ones desired end. The book is set out in question and answer format. The questions, asked by Gurprasad, have been framed from an aspirants point of view. Questions and doubts like these arise in the minds of all those who want to follow a spiritual path. The Guru has given answers that are suitable for ease of understanding by beginners as well as more advanced aspirants. In doing so, the Guru has adopted a rational approach suited to the modern generation and covers all well-known paths to realise the Truth. Sri Sivabala Yogis basic teaching deals with control of mind and it does not advocate any religious beliefs. Every reader of this book can attain his or her desired spiritual object, provided its teaching is put into effect through earnest effort.

Applying his ideas to problems confronting the world today, this collection presents an in-depth exploration of Aurobindo's evolutionary philosophy and Integral Yoga. Written by an international team of scholars and practitioners, each chapter takes a theoretical aspect of Sri Aurobindo's philosophy, positions it alongside policy debates on the individual and the state and explains its practical and educational benefits. Contributors discuss his vision of unity in diversity, shed light on his poetry and offer a comprehensive view of his concept of ethics as well as his metaphysics of consciousness. They examine his contribution to the Indian response to post-Enlightenment modernity and reveal how his philosophy illuminates some of the fundamental problems of our times, offering possible solutions. By presenting the first sustained discourse between Sri Aurobindo and the contemporary world, this collection addresses the relevance of his philosophy for everyday life and highlights the lasting work of this important 20th-century Indian thinker.
