Book excerpt: For Dutton Caliber's American War Heroes series, the gripping and action-packed combat story of America’s most celebrated tank commander, Staff Sergeant Lafayette “War Daddy” Pool. Lafayette Pool provided inspiration for Brad Pitt’s character “War Daddy” Collier in the movie Fury, but his true story is less known. Here, acclaimed author Stephen L. Moore writes the first full-length narrative to honor the valiant Texan tanker. A champion Golden Gloves boxer turned U.S. Army legend, Pool was known as the “ace of tankers” for destroying more than five enemy tanks in head-to-head combat. Sporting a pair of cowboy boots and a confident smile, Pool and his tank, In the Mood, fearlessly led the charge into at least twenty-one different engagements across France, Belgium, and Germany in World War II. His 3rd Armored superiors credit Pool’s crew with destroying at least 275 enemy vehicles, capturing 250 or more enemy soldiers, and killing or wounding more than a thousand opponents. In one three-day period alone, they knocked out four German tanks, three anti-tank guns, and fifty armored vehicles, creating an overwhelming number of enemy casualties. Drawing on official military documents, the memoirs of Pool’s crewmen, and personal interviews with the family of Pool and his comrades, Blood and Fury is full of heated battles, suspenseful near-death experiences, and indomitable bravery. At the heart of it all is an undeniable American hero: Lafayette Pool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the military history of the United States, the noncommissioned officer (NCO) has played a pivotal central role in the shaping and development of the U.S. Army. Indeed, many consider the rank of First Sergeant to be the "backbone" of the Army. During peaceful times, NCO's develop, train, and apply constructive discipline to those who are entrusted to their care and leadership. And it is in wartime that the true value of the NCO, especially those with the rank of First Sergeant, shines forth. It is during time of war that the First Sergeant assumes an even greater responsibility for the soldiers that he leads into battle. There are many fine examples of First Sergeants that have served our country with extraordinary courage, talent, and dedication. "The First Sergeants" gives the reader a true firsthand glimpse of how the skill, discipline, and determination of talented senior NCOs was crucial in the breaking of the will of the Eastern Communist Block. "The First Sergeants" follows the experiences of how a special breed of 1980's peacetime NCOs and First Sergeants of the U.S. Army endured physically and mentally exhausting field exercises. These frequent field exercises were born by a unique class of U. S. Army warrior known as "Cavalry." Morgan is meticulous and spells out in fascinating detail the grueling field ops and maneuvers, the demanding selection processes, and the high-level technical training involved in keeping a peacetime front-line army on the cutting edge of the operations of the art of war. Morgan's extensive knowledge and understanding of what a First Sergeant must accomplish on a day-to-day basis is absolutely stunning and his ability to share that knowledge with the reader is truly enlightening. From the simulated battle problems that test everything to the smallest detail of handling junior enlisted personal issues, this book chronicles in great detail an important part of the career of an exemplary professional senior NCO of the Army. Documenting the worth many times over of the U.S. Army's First Sergeant, "The First Sergeants" is a fascinating story of recent Cold War history. Senior NCO's, like the author, who lived and served during that time were the "tip of the spear" that ensured that the Cold War ended in the most peaceful of all imagined settings. Indeed, the world will be forever indebted to those who held the Communist hordes at bay while holding the "red" line. That they did so in bitterly cold rain, choking hot dust, in daytime and nighttime, 24/7 is a tribute to the steadfast resolve of the First Sergeant and the men that they lead. This in-depth account of a snippet of time in the life of a First Sergeant underscores the ability and dedication to duty that have been the hallmarks of the careers of many U.S. Army First Sergeants. Their careers have served to exemplify the enhanced quality, education, and professionalism of the NCO corps. Once you begin to read "The First Sergeants," you will find it very hard to put down.

Book excerpt: Author Dan Rodgers was in college taking pre-med, had a possible professional baseball career in the offing, and was driving race cars hoping to get on the NASCAR circuit when he received his dreaded draft notice. Two days before he married his lovely wife, Sue, Dan was drafted into the Army. The author and a few friends were sent to Vietnam on the adventure of a lifetime. Dan was a squad leader and sergeant in the Vietnam War and was directly involved in the Tet Offensive in 1968. At one point during Tet, his company lost 126 men in less than two hours. Dan earned the Silver Star when he and a comrade rescued five soldiers trapped in an armored tank. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. At one point, Dan was asked to become a war correspondent and carry a mini camera. He kept notes on whatever paper he could find to write on, but writing the names of dead comrades was tough. Dan lives with the pain of losing his personal friends. His wife is a testament to his nightly torment, as he still suffers with nightmares and flashbacks of the war. Writing this book started as an exercise to relieve stress. Dan would present his writings to doctors, who in turn suggested that he form a chronological order of events. The book Call Me Sergeant Rock was born.
