Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Shakespeare's Comedies I believe that the book, thus annotated and illustrated, will be useful not only as' supplementary reading for young children (the teacher or the parent will of Course see what portions of the notes are suited to their age and capacity), but also as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare for those who are old enough to begin that study in earnest. For this, as we have seen, the T ales were intended, but the authors builded better than they knew. The child's story-book has become an English classic for children of larger growth. Even as a contribution, to Shakespearian criticism it has no mean value, as more than one good critic has pointed out. Mr. Ainger, in his introduction to the edition of 1878, referring to Mary Lamb's work on the Comedies, remarks She constantly evinces a rare shrewdness and tact in her incidental criticisms, which show her to have been, in her way, as keen an observer of human nature as her brother. Mary Lamb had not lived so much among the wits and hu'morists of her day without learning some truths which helped her to interpret the two chief characters of Mar/t Ado About Nothing As there is no one who so little likes to be made a jest of as those who are apt to take the same liberty themselves, so it was with Benedick and Beatrice these two sharp wits never met in former times but a perfect war of raillery was kept up between them, and they always parted mutually displeased with each other.' And again: The hint she gave him that he was a coward, by saying she would eat all he had killed, he did not regard, knowing himself to be a brave man but there is nothing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Book excerpt: The Taming of the Shrew Robust and bawdy, The Taming of the Shrew captivates audiences with outrageous humor as Katharina, the shrew, engages in a contest of wills–and love–with her bridegroom, Petruchio, in a comedy of unmatched theatrical brilliance, filled with visual gags and witty repartee. A Midsummer Night's Dream Fairy magic, love spells, and an enchanted wood turn the mismatched rivalries of four young lovers into a marvelous mix-up of desire and enchantment, all touched by Shakespeare’s inimitable vision of the intriguing relationship between dreams and the waking world. The Merchant of Venice This dark comedy of love and money contains one of the truly mythic figures in literature–Shylock, the Jewish moneylender. The “pound of flesh” he demands as payment of Antonio’s debt has become a universal metaphor for vengeance. Here, pathos and farce combine with moral complexity and romantic entanglements, to display the extraordinary power and range of Shakespeare at his best. Twelfth Night Set in a topsy-turvy world like a holiday revel, this comedy juxtaposes a romantic plot involving separated twins and mistaken identity with a more satiric one about the humiliation of a pompous killjoy. The hilarity is touched with melancholy, and the play ends, not with laughter, but with a clown’s plaintive song. Each Edition Includes: • Comprehensive explanatory notes • Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship • Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English • Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories • An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography

Book excerpt: Excerpt from All Shakespeare's Tales But the purpose of this book is far removed from so presuming an effort, although the writer has, with Lamb, the definite desire to bring Shakespeare nearer to the affections of the young reader. If these Tales awaken interest in the less widely known of Shake speare's plays, if they serve only as simple guides to render the plays more clear to future readers, they will accomplish their purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Shakespeare The following tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in and in Whatever has been added to them to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote. It is my wish that the true plays of Shakespeare may prove to you in older years, enrichers of the fancy, strengtheners of virtue, a withdrawing from all selfish and mercenary thought, a lesson of sweet and honorable thought and actions, to teach you courtesy, benignity, generosity, humanity for of examples, teaching these virtues, his pages are full - Mary Lamb.
