Book excerpt: About four million Syriac Christians, living in the South Indian State of Kerala with important diaspora in India and outside, are following East or West Syriac liturgical traditions. They are popularly known as St Thomas Christians, as they are believed to have been evangelized by the apostle Thomas. As these Christians were in intermittent relationship with the Syriac Christianity in Mesopotamia since the early centuries, they are also known as Syriac Christians. At least since the sixth century, perhaps fourth century, they were following East Syriac Liturgy. In the sixteenth century several East Syriac Prelates, both Catholics and non-Catholics, introduced the East Syriac liturgy in its final form. Since the middle of the sixteenth century nearly half of them are following the West Syriac liturgy. Their liturgical practices provide examples of liturgical conservatism and radical reforms. Now the liturgical texts have been translated into Malayalam, language of Kerala, and English, Hindi or other regional language for the use of the diaspora. However, Syriac is used by several clergy. Syro-Malabar liturgy is a highly latinised form of East Syriac liturgy, followed in the Eastern-Catholic community. Malankara Orthodox Church follows the liturgical rites of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch. History of the Marthoma liturgy, a reformed version of the West Syriac liturgy and used by the Reformed group, is presented here for the first time for the students of Syriac Christianity and liturgy.

Book excerpt: For the past three centuries, studies on the West Syrian liturgy have been mainly concerned with the texts or tracing the history of the rites. West Syrian liturgical theology has received little attention. This is the first book to explain the important orientations of the West Syrian liturgical tradition. What is the role of liturgy in the life and witness of the Church? What does the Church aim to accomplish in and through the liturgy? How is the celebration related to the fundamental principles of the Christian faith? These are some of the questions that this book attempts to answer. An historical sketch of West Syrian liturgy and summary of the structure of the celebrations, namely the Daily Office, Anaphora and other sacraments, sets the context for the deeper explorations into the West Syrian liturgy. Explaining the meaning of the arrangement of the liturgy in various liturgical units, Fr Varghese draws on the West Syrian liturgical commentaries and homilies on liturgical celebrations. Other oriental orthodox liturgical traditions and East Syrian sources are also examined, and key theological principles and ecclesiological and eschatological dimensions are explored. A bibliography of the West Syrian liturgy and a glossary of Syriac terms is provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the liturgy of the Malankara and Syriac Orthodox Churches of India and the Middle East, for children ages 4 – 8 and even older. It is quite natural for children to be curious about and fascinated by the sights, sounds and fragrances they encounter in the Holy Temple during the Holy Qurbono. It is intended to help children learn some of the more common words and names of items that are used in the Liturgy, in English, in Malayalam (the language of Syrian Christians in India), and in Aramaic Syriac (the language of Jesus). My First Holy Qurbono Words is a little book with words that even a young child can quickly learn, and one that may be brought to church every Sunday to help children experience and understand the Liturgy while it is being celebrated.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Music and World Christianities investigates music's role in everyday practice and social history across the diversity of Christian religions and practices around the globe. The volume explores Christian communities in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia as sites of transmission, transformation, and creation of deeply diverse musical traditions. The book's contributors, while mostly rooted in ethnomusicology, examine Christianities and their musics in methodologically diverse ways, engaging with musical sound and structure, musical and social history, and ethnography of music and musical performance. These broad materials explore five themes: music and missions, music and religious utopias (and other oppositional religious communities), music and conflict, music and transnational flows, and music and everyday life. The volume as a whole, then, approaches Christian groups and their musics as diverse and powerful windows into the way in which music, religious ideas, capital, and power circulate (and change) between places, now and historically. It also tries to take account of the religious self-understandings of these groups, presenting Christian musical practice and exchange as encompassing and negotiating deeply felt and deeply rooted moral and cultural values. Given that the centerpiece of the volume is Christian religious musical practice, the volume reveals the active role music plays in maintaining and changing religious, moral, and cultural values in a long history of intercultural and transnational encounters.
