Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest findings about the environmental, social, and economic impact of sustainable forestry Forestry is one of the most important foundations of the Scandinavian economies. Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden: The SUFOR Research Project closely reviews the findings from the eight-year research program first launched in 1997 that searched for ways to maintain sustainable forestry in the region. Respected scholars and experts discuss ways to bridge the chasm separating the world of research with the world of trade and industry. Biodiversity, the impact of humans, environmental conditions, and other facets of sustainability are all presented and discussed in detail. Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden begins with an overview of Swedish forestry and the sustainability debate in Sweden. The full range of human impact is examined in detail with an eye on biodiversity issues. Other research includes the effect of deer browsing on forest development, the importance of root distribution, nutrient sustainability, fresh strategies for long-term forest sustainability, active risk management, and important policy issues. The book is extensively referenced and includes several tables to ensure clarity of data. Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden discusses in detail: the background of the SUFOR program the impact of lower fire-frequency on forest biodiversity transforming research results into useful knowledge for forest practitioners balancing costs and benefits related to deer and moose population density effects of adverse environmental conditions on sensitive trees nutrient availability in plant productivity applicability of mixed stands in sustainable forestry weathering rates of forest soils analysis of sustainability conditions from environmental, social, and economic standpoints multi-objective forest landscape projection models risk management in sustainable forestry moving from policy to implementation of sustainability and biodiversity policy implications resulting from the SUFOR program Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden is enlightening, informative reading for scholars, students, and practitioners in land management issues.

Book excerpt: In this book is summarized those management principles that should be valid in areas where forests continuously are used for production, where biodiversity aspects are important as well as economy and productivity, and where demands on soil status and water quality are set. Especially the very long-term aspects are emphasized, and it is shown how system model thinking is used to reach the goals. Biogeochemical aspects are put forward as they are very important in areas on poor bedrock with acid soils. Forest vitality and stress on trees are treated, as well as the importance of wildlife and their effects of browsing. The balance between social and recreational demands from the society and the economical needs of the landowner is of great concern. Experiences from a special area in South Sweden are presented.

Book excerpt: Temperate broadleaved tree species, i.e. Acer platanoides, Carpinus betulus, Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior, Prunus avium, Quercus robur and Q. petraea, Ulmus glabra and Tilia cordata, cover a total area of 200 000 ha of forest land in southern Sweden. Despite their documented importance for economy, biodiversity, social aspects and climate change adaptation, little applied research has focused on these forest types. With its 20 papers, this volume presents the latest findings concerning the management of broadleaved forests for multiple goals including aspects of natural resource economy, human health, habitat conservation and restoration, forest production and wood science. Thus, this volume of Ecological Bulletins should be of great interest to all actors involved in sustainable forest management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products. It is organized around the criteria for sustainable forest management: productivity, environment, social issues, economics, and legal and institutional framework. More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems. This is the first time that such comprehensive information has been brought together under one cover, using an integrated, holistic approach. Guiding principles and state of the art knowledge are emphasized. The book will enable forest resource managers and planners to evaluate the ability of specific forest regions to sustainably meet bioenergy production demands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RFF's Roger Sedjo and his colleagues discuss initiatives designed to promote and enhance sustainable forestry in temperate countries. While concerns about tropical deforestation are considerable, temperate forests account for the vast majority of the world's roundwood production and most global trade in wood and paper. Improving forest sustainability in such regions is imperative, economically and environmentally. This book illustrates how far nations have progressed, and how far they still need to go, in that effort. The authors describe how temperate nations address forest sustainability, discussing recent developments affecting forestry and trade. Their compilation of international data on forest practices and regulation provides a useful comparative perspective. They analyze the effect of institutional changes (e.g., new laws) on land management. The volume assesses how national forestry industries are adapting to new laws and policies in the face of new realities in production and markets, particularly in the context of international trade and global competition. Country profiles provide details on sustainability policy and performance in eight timber-exporting or major wood-using temperate nations: the United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Germany, France, New Zealand, and Chile. The authors also assess how each nation would be affected by the application of various criteria for sustainability.
