Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores issues in the development of the creative industries in Singapore, with a particular focus on the design sector. It presents case study research into the experiences of design leaders transitioning to leadership positions in the context of the Asia Pacific ‘war for talents’ and Singapore’s drive to become the design hub in Asia. Three in-depth case studies are provided: the case of design managers, the case of design consultants and the case of design entrepreneurs. The case studies reveal complex, inter-related issues and ideals that participants desired of potential designers and future design leaders as part of their transition to design leadership and management roles. The empirical findings of the research led to the generation of a new theory of design leaders’ transition to design leadership and management positions in Singapore, providing a framework for design career and trajectory. This book is significant for design education in Singapore, as well as internationally, because it establishes design leaders’ expectations of designer career trajectories, and the need for a design leadership pipeline. It will be of particular interest to designers and design leaders/managers; educational researchers; curriculum developers; and graduate and postgraduate design students.

Book excerpt: The semiconductor industry is a vital industry for military establishments worldwide, and the control of, or loss of control of, this key industry has enormous strategic implications. This book focuses on the globalization of the strategic semiconductor industry and the security ramifications of this process. It examines in particular the migration of the Taiwanese chip industry to China as part of the globalization of production processes, and the extent to which such a globalization process poses security challenges to the United States, China and Taiwan. Transcending disciplinary boundaries between international political economy, security studies, and the history of science and technology, this multidisciplinary work provides an in-depth understanding of the globalization-security nexus, and disentangles the key policy issues connected to a potential explosive flashpoint in world politics today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip A. Harland and Richard Last consider the economics of early Christian group life within its social, cultural and economic contexts, by drawing on extensive epigraphic and archaeological evidence. In exploring the informal associations, immigrant groups, and guilds that dotted the world of the early Christians, Harland and Last provide fresh perspective on the question of how Christian assemblies and Judean/Jewish gatherings gained necessary resources to pursue their social, religious, and additional aims. By considering both neglected archaeological discoveries and literary evidence, the authors analyse financial and material aspects of group life, both sources of income and various areas of expenditure. Harland and Last then turn to the use of material resources for mutual support of members in various groups, including the importance of burial and the practice of interest-free loans. Christian and Judean evidence is explored throughout this book, culminating in a discussion of texts detailing the internal financial life of Christian assemblies as seen in first and second century sources, including Paul, the Didache, Justin Martyr, and Tertullian. In shedding new light on early Christian financial organisation, this volume aids further understanding of how some Christian groups survived and developed in the Greco-Roman world.

Book excerpt: Contesting the idea that the study of Anglophone literature and literary studies is simply a foreign import in Asia, this collection addresses the genealogies of textual critique and institutionalized forms of teaching of English language and literature in Asia through the 19th and 20th centuries, along with an examination of how its present options and possible future directions relate to these historical contexts. It argues that the establishment of Anglophone literature in Asia did not simply “happen”: there were extra-literary and -academic forces at work, inserting and domesticating in Asian universities both the English language and Anglo-American literature, and their attendant cultural and political values. Offering new perspectives for ongoing conversations surrounding the globalization of Anglophone literature in literary and cultural studies, the book also considers the practicalities of teaching both the language and its canon of classic texts, and that the historical formation and shape of English studies in Asia offers lessons that relate not only to the discipline but also may be applied to the humanities as a whole.
