Book excerpt: The study looks closely at the growing role of the academic library in lecture capture technologies now widely deployed across higher education to capture, preserve and capitalize on the enormous intellectual property embodied in millions of higher education course sessions. The report looks at how academic libraries are themselves using lecture capture in information literacy and other applications, and also how they are playing a role in providing metadata, archiving, technology and education services to other end users of lecture capture technology in higher education. The study provides detailed data on product selection, cooperation with other departments of the college or university over lecture capture deployment, use of lecture capture in technology centers, and the impact of lecture capture on library information literacy efforts.

Students are demanding their lectures be recorded, but many instructors remain resistant. The goal of this study was to investigate faculty perceptions of lecture capture and how to overcome their obstacles to recording. Through a review of the existing literature, three common reasons for not recording were identified: impact on class attendance, incompatible pedagogy and technical concerns. In order to test the hypotheses, an electronic survey was created and distributed to the faculty of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. The survey included both quantitative and qualitative questions. An invitation was e-mailed to all 130 faculty members, garnering 50 responses. Results were consistent with the hypotheses. Impact on class attendance, teaching styles and technical considerations have dissuaded many instructors from adopting lecture capture technology. However, a fourth theme was also identified: lack of awareness/familiarity. According to the qualitative responses, many faculty either did not know lecture recording was available in their teaching spaces or they were not trained in how to use the technology. Instructors who have used lecture capture services in the past felt positively about it and believed it assisted student learning. The non-recording group was divided on the issue, despite existing research proving students use recordings for review and exam preparation rather than substituting for live lecture. Recommendations for future research include distributing the survey campus-wide and providing more opportunities for faculty training. Repeat the survey in one year to see if perceptions have changed.

Book excerpt: This report looks at which students have received training in use of the library eBook collection, how much they use it, and what they think of their training and the collection itself. The study also looks at the impact of the pandemic on college student use of the academic library eBook collection. It helps its readers to answer questions such as: who is using eBooks? Who has received or not received training in how to use the library eBook collection? What do students think of the collection and the training that they have received in its use? How has the pandemic impacted their use of the library eBook collection? Just a few of the report's many findings are that: ?Students raised in the US West are much likelier than those raised in other parts of the USA or abroad to be frequent users of the library eBook collection.?Students from private colleges were almost twice as likely as those from public colleges to be frequent users of the library eBook collection.?Students of Philosophy, History, English, Classics, and Languages more frequently found the book collection very easy or relatively easy to access and use, compared with students from other disciplines.?Only approximately 26% of students with a full time job have received any form of training in how to use the college eBook collection.?Students majoring in journalism were the least likely to find the eBook collection useful to them.?Broken out by race or ethnicity, students of Asian ancestry were more likely than those from other backgrounds to have become more familiar with their library's eBook collection over the course of the pandemic.Data in the 99-page report is broken out by more than 20 personal and institutional variables, so, for example, readers can get specific data on eBook use for first year students vs. sophomores, juniors or seniors, or for students in level 1 research universities vs. doctoral institutions, or for male vs. female or vs. transgender students, or for business/economics majors vs fine arts majors, etc., etc.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Higher education institutions implement lecture capturing technology (LCT) to provide students access to recorded course lectures. Consequently, institutions can experience barriers implementing LCT related to lack of student use of the technology. This study's purpose was to examine whether performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions influence undergraduate nursing students' decisions to use LCT after attending face-to-face lectures at a state college in Florida. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) served as the theoretical framework. This study incorporated a quantitative correlational design and used a modified UTAUT survey instrument to determine if there are statistically significant relationships among the UTAUT constructs and LCT use. A linear regression was performed, and the results suggested there was a statistically significant relationship between the performance expectancy construct and use of LCT, r(116) = .647, p
