Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surnames The volume now offered to those who were kind enough to be interested in my Romance of Names is a second offshoot of the Dictionary of English Surnames on which I have been engaged for some years. It differs in several ways from the former booklet. The Romance of Names was an attempt at a general survey of the subject, and, like all such first attempts, it contained a good many inaccuracies and dubious statements' of which I have tried to purge later editions. It made no special attempt to deal with the curiosities of surname etymology, and the temptation to explore by-ways was firmly resisted. You have only to examine any of those names which serve for lands and also for persons, to see this plainly. If you found the name of Cruicbsnanles, or Prettyman, Black-mantle, or Great-bead, you would not hesitate. These are evidently coined for persons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surname Book and Racial History The students of the Genealogical Society of Utah and of the Relief Society have been greatly in need of a reference book from which to prepare lessons in the study of Surnames. Two years ago the General Board of the Relief Society prepared a year's course in the study of Surnames, expecting to use Baring-Gould's "Story of Family Names" as a text book. We soon exhausted the edition and no other surname book was on the market. A number have been printed, but all are now out of print, so far as is known. As a consequence, this book has been prepared by appointment through the General Board of the Relief Society, and will serve, it is hoped, as a fairly complete reference and text book for our students and friends. No originality is claimed for the work from the general line of books thus far published, unless the choice of extracts and the arrangement of the chapters may prove somewhat unusual. The surname books heretofore published presupposed on the part of the student familiar acquaintance with history and philology; while most of them are purely technical. Our aim has been to begin our study with some acquaintance with the brief racial and historical information required by the ordinary student, who takes up his genealogical studies in the subject of the evolution of surnames as we know them today. Especially do we inquire into tribal and racial beginnings. The matter given concerning Hindu pedigrees and name customs first appears here, and will both enlighten and interest students of surname beginnings. Quotations are freely made in these pages from the historians who have prepared material for the Encyclopedia Britannica, from Myers, Fisher, McCabe, Green, Freeman and Macaulay. Copious extracts are taken from Lower, Yonge, Guppy, Bardsley and S. Baring-Gould, also from Professor O. J. P. Widtsoe's "Introduction to the Study of English Surnames," which was published in the Utah Genealogical and Historical Magazine. Credit may not always be attached to each little extract, but we hereby acknowledge our indebtedness to all of these noted authorities. The inevitable religious trend which is given to all statements and studies by the Latter-day Saints, whenever stating facts or conclusions, necessarily colors this compilation and arrangement of surname studies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Names The interpretation of personal names has always had an attraction for the learned and others, but the first attempts to classify and explain our English surnames date, so far as my knowledge goes, from 1605. In that year Verstegan published his Restitution of Decayed Intelligence, which contains chapters on both fontnames and surnames, and about the same time appeared Camden's Remains Concerning Britain, in which the same subjects are treated much more fully. Both of these learned antiquaries make excellent reading, and much curious information may be gleaned from their pages, especially those of Camden, whose position as Clarencieux King-at-Arms gave him exceptional opportunities for genealogical research. From the philological point of view they are of course untrustworthy, though less so than most modern writers on the same subject. About the middle of the nineteenth century, the period of Archbishop Trench and Canon Taylor, began a kind of boom in works of this kind, and books on surnames are now numerous. But of all these industrious compilers one only, Bardsley, can be taken seriously. His Dictionary of English Surnames, published (Oxford Press, 1901) from his notes some years after his death, is invaluable to students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Surnames: Their Sources and Significations Book, casting aside the new importation, were, in the great majority of cases, obsolete by the end of the twelfth century, and of those which have survived and descended to us as surnames, well-nigh all are devoid of diminutive or patronymic desinences - a clear proof that they were utterly out of fashion as personal names during the era of surname formation. The Norman invasion was not a conquest of our language, but it was of our nomenclature. The 'saturday Review' may still demand that we shall view all as English, and obliterate the distinctive terms of Saxon and Norman, but in doing so let us not forget facts. The language which preceded the Norman Conquest is still the ave/aide of ordinary converse. The nomenclature of that period went down like Pharaoh's chariot, and like Pharaoh's chariot, which for all I know lies where it did, was never recovered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Names and Their Story Mr. M. A. Lower was the first in modern times to break ground in the domain of family nomenclature - in 1842, when he published his first edition of "English Surnames." There were in it many mistakes, and the work was tentative. A better book of his was "Patronymica Britannica," a dictionary of family names that appeared in 1860. But the share of scientific research first entered the soil with Canon Isaac Taylor's "Words and Places," 1864. Since then there have been various works on the subject, some good, some bad, some instructive, others misleading; there have been treatises on Irish and Scottish, and on particular county names. Mr. R. Ferguson, in his "English Surnames and their Place in the Teutonic Family," 1858, and "Surnames as a Science," 1883, and "The Teutonic Name-System applied to Family Names in France, England, and Germany," 1864, went too far in deriving most surnames from Teutonic roots, led thereto by Forstemann's "Altdeutsches Namenbuch" (Nordhausen, 1856), a vast work that has been condensed by Heintze in "Die Deutschen Familiennamen" (Halle, 1882).
