Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surgical treatment of morbid obesity has undergone astonishing growth since its inception thirty years ago. The medical profession has long been aware of the discouraging intractability of morbid obesity to all forms of conservative management, and it is only recently that physicians have come to realize that surgery can provide very real palliation for the morbidly obese patient. Surgery does not attack the underlying etiology of morbid obesity, whatever it may be, but exerts its effect indirectly either by effecting a calorie loss through intestinal shunting, or by calorie deprivation through a radical reduction of gastric capacity. Acceptance of bariatric surgery as a legitimate therapeutic modality has met with considerable resistance by many physicians for two principal reasons. The first relates to the rather prevalent but unjustifiable attitude both within and without the medical profession that morbid obesity is an expression of slovenliness, the result of a character defect, or a defect of the will, and of an "easy way that those so atHicted should not be extended the benefit out," but should "shape up" by rigorous diet and exercise. The second more serious concern that has blunted enthusiasm for bariatric surgery has been the large number of late complications following jejunoileal bypass, and the high incidence of perioperative complications and revisional operations in some quarters following gastric reduction procedures. It is to these concerns that this book is addressed.

Book excerpt: The global obesity epidemic is growing in severity, affecting people of every age and costing healthcare providers millions of dollars every year. Every day, anesthesiologists are presented with obese and morbidly obese patients undergoing every type of surgical procedure; the management of these patients differs significantly from that of normal weight patients undergoing the same procedure. Anesthetic Management of the Obese Surgical Patient discusses these specific management issues within each surgical specialty area. Initial chapters describe pre-operative assessment and pharmacology; these are followed by detailed chapters on the anesthetic management of a wide variety of surgical procedures, from joint replacement to open heart surgery. Essential reading for anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists worldwide, Anesthetic Management of the Obese Surgical Patient and its companion work by the same authors, Morbid Obesity: Peri-operative Management, enable both trainees and practised professionals to manage this complex patient group effectively.

Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the world, resulting in suffering and premature death. Morbid obesity is a chronic medical illness that has long-reaching consequences and is caused by multiple factors. Bariatric surgery and other non-invasive procedures in carefully selected patients are effective treatments for obesity. It is the only tool for sustained and effective long-term weight loss. The field of surgery is developing rapidly offering innovative options for patients who have failed to lose weight by diet, exercise and pharmacological methods. The editors review problems that the patients face in the perioperative period and in the long term, as well as their adjustments in lifestyle and healthcare management. The text is authored by authorities who participate in the multidisciplinary care of bariatric patients. It will address the assessment and selection of patients' treatment before surgery, options for surgical intervention and postoperative medical management.
