Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the most important ideas ever conceived in particle physics. It is a symmetry that relates known elementary particles of a certain spin to as yet undiscovered particles that differ by half a unit of that spin (known as Superparticles). Supersymmetric models now stand as the most promising candidates for a unified theory beyond the Standard Model (SM). SUSY is an elegant and simple theory, but its existence lacks direct proof. Instead of dismissing supersymmetry altogether, Supersymmetry Beyond Minimality: from Theory to Experiment suggests that SUSY may exist in more complex and subtle manifestation than the minimal model. The book explores in detail non-minimal SUSY models, in a bottom-up approach that interconnects experimental phenomena in the fermionic and bosonic sectors. The book considers with equal emphasis the Higgs and Superparticle sectors, and explains both collider and non-collider experiments. Uniquely, the book explores charge/parity and lepton flavour violation. Supersymmetry Beyond Minimality: from Theory to Experiment provides an introduction to well-motivated examples of such non-minimal SUSY models, including the ingredients for generating neutrino masses and/or relaxing the tension with the heavily constraining Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data. Examples of these scenarios are explored in depth, in particular the discussions on Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric SM (NMSSM) and B-L Supersymmetric SM (BLSSM).

This book is a comprehensive introduction to these recent developments. It contains a review of the Standard Model, covering non-perturbative topics, and a discussion of grand unified theories and magnetic monopoles. It introduces the basics of supersymmetry and its phenomenology, and includes dynamics, dynamical supersymmetry breaking, and electric-magnetic duality. The book then covers general relativity and the big bang theory, and the basic issues in inflationary cosmologies before discussing the spectra of known string theories and the features of their interactions. The book also includes brief introductions to technicolor, large extra dimensions, and the Randall-Sundrum theory of warped spaces. This will be of great interest to graduates and researchers in the fields of particle theory, string theory, astrophysics and cosmology. The book contains several problems, and password protected solutions will be available to lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521858410.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics is remarkably successful and has survived two decades of precision tests at high energy particle accelerators. However, it is known to be incomplete, and there are reasons to believe that there is new physics at energy scales that will soon be probed in greater detail than ever before by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a proton-proton accelerator being built near Geneva. This thesis contains a diverse set of topics that may broadly be described as physics beyond the SM. In Chapter 2, implications of current experimental constraints are presented for the stop masses and mixing in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), a well-motivated candidate for physics beyond the SM. It is found, for example, that lower bounds on the stop masses are as large as 1 TeV assuming no stop-mixing. Chapter 3 presents the regions in the MSSM with the minimal amount of fine-tuning of electroweak symmetry breaking. The minimal amount of tuning increases enormously for a Higgs mass beyond 120 GeV. Supersymmetry cannot be an exact symmetry, and one possibility is that our Universe is in a long-lived metastable state with broken supersymmetry. In Chapter 4, a generic model with this property is constructed in which all the relevant parameters, including the supersymmetry breaking scale, are generated dynamically. This model has several interesting model-building features including an explicitly and spontaneously broken R-symmetry, a singlet, a large global symmetry, naturalness, renormalizability, and a "pseudo-runaway'' direction. In Chapter 5, a simple extension of the SM with weakly interacting non-chiral dark matter particles is presented. Such particles can be detected at a future direct-detection experiment. There are a wide variety of possible discovery signatures for new physics at the LHC. A discovery signature with a large SM background that has not been well studied involves multi-jet events without leptons and/or missing energy. In Chapter 6, it is found that using innovative search strategies pair production of new coloured adjoint fermions producing a pure six-jet final state can be detected up to a mass of about 650-700 GeV with 10 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.

Book excerpt: Spontaneously-broken supersymmetry could solve many mysterious problems in particle physics including the hierarchy problem. The simplest realization of spontaneously-broken supersymmetry, the so-called Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, is one of the best studied candidates for physics beyond the Standard Model. There is only indirect evidence and motivation for the existence of supersymmetry. In my opinion the term "Supersymmetry" is a misnomer . Symmetry has always been a prevailing premise and aid to understand the fundamental behavior of the forces of nature, the sciences and most all fields of rigorous study.

Book excerpt: This thesis studies collider phenomenology of physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It also explores in detail advanced topics related to Higgs boson and supersymmetry – one of the most exciting and well-motivated streams in particle physics. In particular, it finds a very large enhancement of multiple Higgs boson production in vector-boson scattering when Higgs couplings to gauge bosons differ from those predicted by the Standard Model. The thesis demonstrates that due to the loss of unitarity, the very large enhancement for triple Higgs boson production takes place. This is a truly novel finding. The thesis also studies the effects of supersymmetric partners of top and bottom quarks on the Higgs production and decay at the LHC, pointing for the first time to non-universal alterations for two main production processes of the Higgs boson at the LHC–vector boson fusion and gluon–gluon fusion. Continuing the exploration of Higgs boson and supersymmetry at the LHC, the thesis extends existing experimental analysis and shows that for a single decay channel the mass of the top quark superpartner below 175 GeV can be completely excluded, which in turn excludes electroweak baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model. This is a major new finding for the HEP community. This thesis is very clearly written and the introduction and conclusions are accessible to a wide spectrum of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetry is at an exciting stage of development. It extends the Standard Model of particle physics into a more powerful theory that both explains more and allows more questions to be addressed. Most important, it opens a window for studying and testing fundamental theories at the Planck scale. Experimentally we are finally entering the intensity and energy regions where superpartners are likely to be detected, and then studied. There has been progress in understanding the remarkable physics implications of supersymmetry, including the derivation of the Higgs mechanism, the unification of the Standard Model forces, cosmological connections such as a candidate for the cold dark matter of the universe and the scalar fields that drive inflation and their potential, the relationship to Planck scale theories, and more. While there are a number of reviews and books where the mathematical structure and uses of supersymmetry can be learned, there are few where the particle physics is the main focus. This book fills that gap. It begins with an excellent pedagogical introduction to the physics and methods and formalism of supersymmetry, by S Martin, which is accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of the Standard Model of particle physics. Next is an overview of open questions by K Dienes and C Kolda, followed by chapters on topics ranging from how to detect superpartners to connections with Planck scale theories, by leading experts. This invaluable book will allow any interested physicist to understand the coming experimental and theoretical progress in supersymmetry, and will also help students and workers to quickly learn new aspects of supersymmetry they want to pursue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we explore different aspects related to the central concepts of supersymmetry and physics beyond the Standard Model. We start by investigating fine-tuning in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, where the regions with the minimal amount of fine-tuning of electroweak symmetry breaking are found. Afterwards, we concentrate on a more formal aspect of supersymmetry, studying spontaneous symmetry breaking in supersymmetry using the superspace formalism. Thereafter we direct our attention to supersymmetry as physics beyond the Standard Model, looking more specifically at supersymmetry breaking in metastable states. First, we discuss possible undetected Higgs decays in the Pentagon model with renormalizable lepton number violating couplings which also explain neutrino masses. Second, we generalize metastable supersymmetry breaking in supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics to phenomenologically viable models of direct gauge mediation by adding single and multitrace deformations. Third, we introduce a new model of physics beyond the Standard Model, the Pyramid Scheme, and study its implications, focusing on dark matter and its astrophysical signatures in particular. Four, we examine tunneling constraints in models of Cosmological Supersymmetry Breaking, arguing that these models can have no supersymmetric vacuum states in the infinite Planck mass limit. Finally, we present a general study of the possible gamma ray signatures coming from dark matter annihilation or decay.
