Book excerpt: With recent advances in integrated single-photon sources and quantum memories, onchip integration of high-performance single-photon detectors becomes increasingly important. The superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) is the leading single-photon counting technology for quantum information processing. Among various waveguide materials, aluminum nitride (AlN) is a promising candidate because of its exceptionally wide bandgap, and intrinsic piezoelectric and electro-optic properties. In this Master's thesis, we developed a complete fabrication process for making high-performance niobium nitride SNSPDs on AlN, and demonstrated their integration with AlN photonic waveguides. The detectors fabricated on this new substrate material have demonstrated saturated detection efficiency from visible to near-IR, sub-60-ps timing jitter, and ~6 ns reset time. This work will contribute towards building a fully integrated quantum photonic processor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the basics and applications of superconducting devices in quantum optics. Over the past decade, superconducting devices have risen to prominence in the arena of quantum optics and quantum information processing. Superconducting detectors provide unparalleled performance for the detection of infrared photons in quantum cryptography, enable fundamental advances in quantum optics, and provide a direct route to on-chip optical quantum information processing. Superconducting circuits based on Josephson junctions provide a blueprint for scalable quantum information processing as well as opening up a new regime for quantum optics at microwave wavelengths. The new field of quantum acoustics allows the state of a superconducting qubit to be transmitted as a phonon excitation. This volume, edited by two leading researchers, provides a timely compilation of contributions from top groups worldwide across this dynamic field, anticipating future advances in this domain.

Book excerpt: This work presents the development and application of high-speed fluorescent thermal imaging for quench analysis in high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Using a fluorescent coating, with a temperature-dependent light emission, temperature changes can be calculated over 2D surfaces. The technique uncovered peculiar transient effects in novel HTS tape architectures and also helped to verify and better understand hot spot development in both insulated and non-insulated, HTS–wound pancake coils.

Book excerpt: High-temperature superconductors have distinct advantages compared to conventional conductors. Below their critical temperature, superconductors have immeasurably low ohmic losses. To maintain the superconducting state, superconductors require constant cooling. This study aims at identifying the environmental impacts of the application of superconductors in future grid technologies such as superconducting power cables.

Book excerpt: Many single photon detection systems are based on the technology of superconducting nanowires. But despite their high detection efficiency, the need of cooling them to cryogenic temperatures prohibits their widespread usage. This book shows the progress of integrated (thick) CMOS SPADs towards high photon detection probabilities and applications such as in low-cost consumer data communication and high-end single-photon counting for quantum applications. Newest research results are introduced and comprehensively detailed. Key Features The topic is covered from basics to applications. The properties of discrete SPADs and of integrated SPADs are compared in compact form. Dedicated circuits to exploit discrete and integrated SPADs are introduced and explained in detail. Microelectronics and optoelectronics are combined in an easily understandable way. Numerous elaborate illustrations and tables facilitate and enhance comprehension.
