Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe “Buddy” Schmitz was born Deaf in Nebraska to a farming family, the youngest of four children. (His brother and two sisters are all hearing.) He attended the Nebraska School for the Deaf and, later, Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. His native language is American Sign Language (ASL); he learned to read and write English at school. This book is half a memoir of growing up in rural Nebraska in the 1940s and half a mystery involving himself and three of his friends, set in that time period. The mystery is eventually solved by young Buddy and his three hearing friends, after many adventures, some of which are true (for instance, climbing the church bell tower). This book is appropriate for all ages; the mystery is about a death, there is no violence involved. The four children solve the mystery by using their own good sense and desire to do the right thing. The children also provide the adults in the story with a lesson in not jumping to conclusions. Joe hopes that people reading this book will be transported back in time to when rural families had little or no electricity and used an ice box instead of a refrigerator, etc. Both the memoir part of the book and the mystery show what farming families’ lives were like in that time and place. His life is somewhat different from what other rural, Midwestern people from that time period experienced because he was Deaf and faced unusual challenges, like making friends with people who don’t know ASL.

Book excerpt: Darrell Williams is a man on a mission. His mission is to make up for all of the wrong he has done in his life by living daily in the light of the Lord. His story is one of grace, of forgiveness, of gratitude. For almost 30 years Darrell pursued a criminal lifestyle. As an IV drug user, a crack addict and an alcoholic, he had only one goal, to score his next fix, regardless of the cost to others. He engaged in forgery, pimping, stealing, scamming and lying to get to his next high. To meet Darrell today you would never guess that he is a man with a wicked past. The people he has helped over the past seven years believe him to be an angel. Ex-cons, former drug addicts, troubled youth, and homeless vagrants all know that they can call on Darrell for help, support, and acceptance. There is no need too great for Darrell to address, and no kindness too large for him to extend. Darrell credits the Lord for his complete transformation from criminal to Christian calling on the Creator with one small prayer, "Lord, please take the taste for drugs and alcohol from me." With that request, his life was changed. To his very core, Darrell believes that the same miracle can be extended to anyone who has the courage to ask for it, and the faith to believe that they too can be free from the grip of mind-altering substances. After reading Darrell's story you too will believe that miracles can happen in your own life and the lives of those you love.

Book excerpt: The master of American fiction returns to the territory of his beloved classic, Dandelion Wine—a sequel 50 years in the making Some summers refuse to end . . . October 1st, the end of summer. The air is still warm, but fall is in the air. Thirteen-year-old Douglas Spaulding, his younger brother Tom, and their friends do their best to take advantage of these last warm days, rampaging through the ravine, tormenting the girls . . . and declaring war on the old men who run Green Town, IL. For the boys know that Colonel Quartermain and his cohorts want nothing more than to force them to put away their wild ways, to settle down, to grow up. If only, the boys believe, they could stop the clock atop the courthouse building. Then, surely, they could hold onto the last days of summer . . . and their youth. But the old men were young once, too. And Quartermain, crusty old guardian of the school board and town curfew, is bent on teaching the boys a lesson. What he doesn’t know is that before the last leaf turns, the boys will give him a gift: they will teach him the importance of not being afraid of letting go.
