Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some patients in the acute care setting, an artificial airway is needed to sustain life. An important part of providing care to those with artificial airways is to suction out lung secretions from the airway. This practice of artificial airway suctioning is ever changing, and many nurses have their own techniques when it comes to this procedure. Suctioning is necessary for an artificial airway, but can also cause problems for patients, such as heart rate changes, oxygen saturation changes, and pain (Maggiore et. al, 2013). Implementing nurse education on proper suctioning techniques along with hospital-wide policy changes to include evidence based starts of practice will help aid in the decrease of adverse reactions to suctioning.
