Book excerpt: Stumbling in the Half-Light follows a self-professed “chubby little half-breed” from the Six Nations reservation as he embarks on a lifetime of spiritual adventures within the Baha’i community. Through fifty-two short, autobiographical stories, John Sargent retells a life of humour, humility, loss, and faith. John’s endearing openness leads him through a life of adventure—from a childhood on the reserve, to years in Africa, to a career in architecture and finally as an administrator of First Nations communities. But his real calling: was to bring the Baha’i faith to First Nations communities throughout North America. Some of the reviewers of the manuscript had this to say about Stumbling in the Half-Light:

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life story of Dr. Ethel Margaret Phillips (1876–1951) is remarkable. She was one of the first women to graduate as a medical doctor at the University of Manchester, in England. She was also a "suffragist" who became a pioneering missionary in China at a time when missions were invariably led by men, and women missionaries were dutiful wives. She remained unmarried and independent of any authority, save that of her own conscience. This occasionally led to hot disputes with those who did not share her views, such as the Anglican Bishop in China, William White. Margaret Phillips worked for the Society for Propagating the Gospel and the Canadian Church Inland Mission. Among her duties, she was responsible for building and running hospitals in Pingyin and Kaifeng. Later she moved to Peking where she practiced medicine as well as teaching in the Women’s Medical School. She was fluent in Chinese, giving lectures, and translating several medical texts into that language. Phillips endured the Japanese occupation of China during WW II. She fled China to England, as a refugee, when the Chinese Communists seized power. Her remaining years were spend in England where she died and was buried. Dr. Margaret Phillip’s life was one of faith, drama, stubborn focus, and Christian service. The biography, The Lady Named Thunder, is written by her adopted son, Cliff Phillips, from her extensive journals, letters and notes, as well as his own personal recollections. It seeks to place Margaret Phillip’s life within the greater stream of history. As it relies heavily on documentary evidence, the manuscript features the authentic voice of a unique woman, who found her cause as a medical missionary in China. Dr. Phillip’s career and life touches on various large themes including: the history of medicine, women’s history, Victorian life and childhood, foreign missions in China, foreign life in China under the Treaty System, development of Western medicine in China, and aspects of Chinese politics and international relations in the first half of the 20th century. The manuscript, although framed as a popular work, sheds complimentary light on the history of missionaries in China.

Book excerpt: Stumbling Down the Shamanic Path relates how a spiritual skeptic became a questioner, a meditator who avoided gurus, an explorer of earth energies, and then met the teacher who discerned the shaman sleeping in the spirit of a middle-aged alpinist. That was only the beginning, for pursuit of this new tack offered a new set of hurdles. After years of bumpy roads, Michle Burdet is today a practitioner of ancient shamanic arts such as soul retrieval and is teaching apprentices to carry on the torch of what she likes to call prehistoric psychotherapy.

Book excerpt: "Trow goes out on a high note with his sterling 11th and final mystery starring English playwright Kit Marlow.... Trow reinforces his place at the top of the Elizabethan mystery subgenre with this outing" - Publishers Weekly Starred Review The inaugural performance of Christopher Marlowe's controversial new play is marred by sudden, violent death in this lively 16th century mystery. December, 1592. England is entering dangerous waters as thoughts turn to the question of the ageing Queen Elizabeth's successor. Christopher Marlowe meanwhile is leading a troupe of the Lord Chamberlain's Men on tour with a controversial new play. Marlowe expects his latest play, Edward II, to ruffle feathers. What he doesn't expect is it to lead to is sudden, violent death. The morning the tour is due to begin, the newest member of the cast is found stabbed to death in the local brothel. And when a second murder, and then a third, disrupt rehearsals for the inaugural performance in the Great Hall at Scudbury Manor, it becomes clear that someone is determined to prevent this play from being performed – at any cost. But who ... and why?
