Book excerpt: This systematic review investigates the impact, effectiveness, inclusivity, and implementation challenges of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in India's educational landscape. The SSA, launched in 2018, integrates the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), and Teacher Education (TE) programs, aiming to create a seamless continuum of education from pre-primary to senior secondary levels. A comprehensive literature search across five databases identified 65 relevant studies. These studies indicate that the SSA has significantly improved access to education, particularly for girls and marginalized communities, through enhanced infrastructure and targeted interventions. However, challenges persist in ensuring quality education. Teacher training programs often lack consistency and context-specific modules, and curriculum reforms and technology integration require more extensive implementation. Inclusivity has improved, with better access for children with disabilities and successful early childhood education interventions, although resource gaps remain. Digital education initiatives like DIKSHA show promise but are hindered by the digital divide, necessitating substantial investment in digital infrastructure. Implementation challenges, including inadequate funding, bureaucratic hurdles, and lack of accountability, impede the effective realization of SSA's goals. Addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing the program's impact. Based on these findings, the review recommends strengthening teacher training, expanding digital infrastructure, increasing funding, implementing targeted interventions for marginalized groups, and enhancing accountability mechanisms. These measures are vital for SSA to achieve its objectives of providing equitable and quality education to all children in India.

For ensuring free and compulsory education for all children up to the age of 14 years, India has made enormous effort. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) launched during 2000, is a mission which makes an effort to universalize access of children to the school and enroll them into the system so as to retain them in schools including emphasizing on quality education at elementary level. The present book based upon research findings presents about problems in execution of SSA interventions . Teaching learning materials plays pivotal role in class room situation.Still teachers exhibited lack of interest with regard to use of teaching learning materials.Infrastructural development is quite spectacular in SSA schools, free uniform to girls and scholarship to SC & ST students have been provided as a special incentive by the state government. The inherent problems need to be weed out through combined effort of all the personnel. The book suggests finer cooperation among the different personnel to make the system stronger and improve quality of elementary education in the country.

In this regard quality has been one of the major concerns of education across all levels. With the globalisation of economy demand for quality education has become all the more prominent. Presently different sections of the society in any part of the world do not have an equal access to education especially in the developing and under-developed countries so much so that inequality in the distribution of earnings and inequality in access to education form an unabated vicious circle forcing every nation to set the clock right. The book addresses elementary education with special reference to Universalisation of Elementary Education (UEE) and quality concerns in terms of pedagogical quests. Implementation of UEE programme depends upon a holistic planning and management strategies instrumentalities as well as methods of strategic implementation in schools. The book also attempts to make an empirical research on the basis of case study of Andhra Pradesh and reflects determinants of disparities along with implications and suggestions. It presents the perspectives of UEE vis-à-vis the emerging educational innovations and practices. Research scholars policy makers and in-service teachers may find the book useful.

Book excerpt: "The 77-page report documents discrimination by school authorities in four Indian states against Dalit, tribal, and Muslim children. The discrimination creates an unwelcome atmosphere that can lead to truancy and eventually may lead the child to stop going to school. Weak monitoring mechanisms fail to identify and track children who attend school irregularly, are at risk of dropping out, or have dropped out."--Publisher's website.
