All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Bilingual and multilingual research has mainly focused on segmental phonology, vocabulary and syntactic structures. The acquisition of native-like prosodic patterns has often been taken for granted. A study of prosodic features is particularly relevant since many children born into families of non-native speakers acquire English as a first or second language alongside the family or local language. Previous research has mainly identified general trends and found that children as a group are mainly accurate in their comprehension or production, but few studies have tried to go into detail and examine prosodic features in individual children. This thesis investigates the acquisition of prosodic parameters in two multilingual children, aged 10;5 and 9;5, learning English alongside Standard Chinese and Cantonese. Their data are compared with data from monolingual native-speakers and Cantonese speakers of English (L2 learners). Controlled experiments using minimal pairs and testing both comprehension and production of prosodic phrasing ("chocolate biscuits and milk" vs. "chocolate, biscuits and milk") and compound vs phrasal stress ("hot dog" vs. "hot dog") were conducted with each respondent. Praat phonetic analyses of the output and acoustic measurements were combined with auditory observations and listeners' disambiguation. Comprehension was tested in identification tasks drawing on prosodic cues only. Results indicated that the multilingual children were less successful in using pitch movements to signal prosodic boundaries and convey compound and phrasal rhythmic patterns that the monolingual children. In terms of segmental and pause durations, and final-syllable lengthening, both multilingual children showed more consistency in their production. This supports previous monolingual research (Peeppe et al., 2000; Danbovicova et al., 2004) that temporal cues are more systematically used and more reliable disambiguating factors, which many contribute to their earlier acquisition (Vihman, 1996). In addition, the ability to accurately produce rhythmic patterns of compounds and phrases may develop at an even later stage in multilingual that in monolingual acquisition (Atkinson-King, 1973; Vogel & Raimy, 2002). Compared to L2 learners, the multilingual children have a well-differentiated English phonology with subtle evidence for language transfer (e.g., strengthening of unstressed vowels and tone on unstressed syllables) and deceleration (e.g., less stable or consistent production of single-stressed compounds). The L2 learners, although sensitive to contrasts in pitch, duration and lengthening, many never fully develop the ability to manipulate prosodic cues in a native-like way. Comprehension tests reveal that the relationship between perception and production of the same feature is no straightforward. Good perception does not mean accurate and unambiguous production while unsuccessful perception does not imply inaccurate and ambiguous production while unsuccessful perception does not imply inaccurate and ambiguous output. This thesis examines children's perception and production of prosody, and contributes some detailed insights into prosodic development of monolingual, multilingual, and L2 learners. Book excerpt: Research has consistently identified two factors which affect how previously learned languages may influence the learning of a third: typological closeness and second language (L2) status. Although typology seems to play a more influential role in the acquisition of lexis in a third language (L3) (e.g., Rossi, 2006), the influence of L2 status has been observed in the acquisition of phonology (e.g., Williams & Hammarberg, 1998). However, these two factors are often confounded with each other, and with other variables such as proficiency. The aim of this study was to control for these variables and investigate the relative influences of L2 status and typology on lexis (lexical inventions) and phonology (aspiration) in L3 production. The research question addressed was: Which is a stronger predictor of the source language for lexical and phonological influence in L3 acquisition: L2 status or typology? Two groups of L3-Spanish learners, 11 with English-L1 and French-L2, and 11 with French-L1 and English-L2 were recorded reading word lists and describing pictures in their L3. Paired samples t -test examined the frequency of French- and English-influenced instances of lexical inventions, as well as the presence or absence of aspiration in the word-initial voiceless stops /p t k/. Findings indicate that French, the typologically closer language to Spanish, had the greatest influence on lexical production, while L2 status had a more marked effect on L3 pronunciation than typology. The results suggest that the two factors investigated may affect different areas of language in different ways.

Book excerpt: Seven years ago Manfred Pienemann proposed a novel psycholinguistic theory of language development, Processability Theory (PT). This volume examines the typological plausibility of PT. Focusing on the acquisition of Arabic, Chinese and Japanese the authors demonstrate the capacity of PT to make detailed and verifiable predictions about the developmental schedule for each language. This cross-linguistic perspective is also applied to the study of L1 transfer by comparing the impact of processability and typological proximity. The typological perspective is extended by including a comparison of different types of language acquisition. The architecture of PT is expanded by the addition of a second set of principles that contributes to the formal modeling of levels of processability, namely the mapping of argument-structure onto functional structure in lexical mapping theory. This step yields the inclusion of a range of additional phenomena in the processability hierarchy thus widening the scope of PT.

By means of a large production database, the study seeks to uncover how L1-to-L2 intonational transfer works and what role prosodic (dis)similarities between languages play. Contrary to most previous research, the work presents an original multidirectional cross-linguistic comparison and examines different types of sentence, such as neutral and non-neutral statements, yes/no questions, wh-questions, exclamatives and vocatives. The findings reveal positive and negative transfer from L1 to L2, and the formation of mixed patterns as well as native-like patterns, which are mainly constrained by linguistic factors such as the type of sentence and the position of the tonal event in the utterance. The results are discussed within Mennen’s (2015) L2 Intonation Learning theory and lead to the formulation of a Developmental L2 Intonation Hypothesis that makes several generalizations to characterize interlanguage intonation. This volume not only represents a step forward in the study of the acquisition of L2 intonation in general but also offers valuable findings that can be directly or indirectly applied in the classroom and will hopefully inspire further research.

Book excerpt: The dissertation aims to better understand the role of native word prosody in the cross-linguistic processing of non-native word prosodic cues (WPCs) (i.e., non-native pitch contrasts and position) at three processing levels: the auditory-acoustic level, the phonological level which taps into abstract representations, and the lexical level where phonological knowledge is encoded to integrate sound-to-meaning associations in word learning. Mandarin, Japanese, and Dutch listeners are selected since these three languages not only differ in their use of WPCs (Mandarin: lexical tones, Japanese: lexical pitch accent, Dutch: lexical stress) but also share commonalities (Mandarin and Japanese: use lexical pitch; Japanese and Dutch: use positional marking cues).00The dissertation applies an AX discrimination task, a sequence recall task and an associated word learning task to investigate the processing of non-native WPCs at the acoustic, phonological and lexical level, respectively, by the three groups of listeners.00The findings show that at the acoustic level, both the acoustic features and the native word prosody influence the perception of non-native WPCs. At the phonological level and lexical level, the use of lexical pitch in the native word prosody plays a pivotal role in the encoding of non-native WPCs. Intonation is found, to some extent, also influence the processing of non-native WPCs at the three levels. Moreover, language-specific and language-general patterns are observed in the processing of non-native WPCs at the three processing levels. Position is found to play different roles in interacting with the processing of non-native pitch contrasts at the three different processing levels.
