Book excerpt: Papers presented at the Fifteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2007 (see also Studia Patristica 44, 45, 47, 48 and 49). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholars believe that Mark wrote his Gospel to the Romans. True: but in addition to presenting the Gospel to the Romans, Mark actually contextualized his Gospel by challenging the leading propaganda of his day, Virgil’s Aeneid. The Roman poet, Virgil, wrote his masterpiece epic poem, the Aeneid, to promote the myth that Caesar Augustus was the son of god. The Aeneid went viral almost immediately upon publication in 19 BC, becoming Rome’s premier piece of propaganda that promoted Augustus as the emperor who would bring peace to the world. Within the first century, the Aeneid reached from Masada to northern Britain and became a foundational piece of Roman education. Mark’s mother, Mary, and his uncle, Joseph/Barnabas, raised him in wealth, and educated him in the four languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin. They drew him to Jesus, and Barnabas took Mark on the first missionary journey. Mark spent time with Peter in Rome, where Mark wrote his Gospel in Greek. Mark most certainly had direct access to the most influential piece of Latin literature, the Aeneid, and he wrote his masterpiece Gospel comparing Augustus with Jesus, the true Son of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of the Gospel of John is known for its complexity. On the basis of the modern standards of transparency and logic, previous scholars have depicted this language as obscure, confusing, and mysterious. Thomas Tops goes beyond these oversimplifications by providing an in-depth historical study of John's characterisation of Jesus' language with the terms paroimia and parr e sia . By providing original insights in these terms, the author offers a new perspective on the functioning of Johannine language. As the Johannine Jesus teaches both through paroimia and parr e sia , his language conceals and reveals at the same time. His criticism is veiled and calls on its addressees to search for the hidden meanings of his words. Veiled speech allows the Johannine Jesus to criticise his opponents and openly reveal his messianic identity to those who cannot accept the truth in any other way.

The specific focus of the volume is the examination of cultural producers and their particular viewpoints and agendas in an attempt to shed new light on the religious thinkers, texts, and material remains of late antiquity. The essays explore the major creative movements of the era, examining the strategies used to develop and designate orthodoxies and orthopraxies. This collection of essays reinterprets dialogues between individuals and groups, illuminating the mutual competition and influence among these ancient thinkers and communities. Features: Essays feature competitive discourse as the central organizing theme Articles present unique theoretical models that are adaptable to different contexts and highly applicable to religious discourses before and after the Late Antique Period Scholars cover a much wider range of traditions including Judaism, Christianity, paganism, and philosophy in order to provide the most complete portrait of the religious landscape
