Book excerpt: The interrelation among composition, microstructure, and properties of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric compounds is a major field of research for both scientific and technological reasons. As such, this book focuses on metal oxides, which present a large diversity of electrical, magnetic, optical, optoelectronic, thermal, electrochemical, and catalytic properties, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. By bringing together scientific contributions with special emphasis on the interrelations between materials chemistry, processing, microstructures, and properties of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric metal oxides, this book highlights the importance of tightly integrating high-throughput experiments (including both synthesis and characterization) and efficient and robust theory for the design of advanced materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenge for producing “invisible” electronic circuitry and opto-electronic devices is that the transistor materials must be transparent to visible light yet have good carrier mobilities. This requires a special class of materials having “contra-indicated properties” because from the band structure point of view, the combination of transparency and conductivity is contradictory. Structured to strike a balance between introductory and advanced topics, this monograph juxtaposes fundamental science and technology / application issues, and essential materials characteristics versus device architecture and practical applications. The first section is devoted to fundamental materials compositions and their properties, including transparent conducting oxides, transparent oxide semiconductors, p-type wide-band-gap semiconductors, and single-wall carbon nanotubes. The second section deals with transparent electronic devices including thin-film transistors, photovoltaic cells, integrated electronic circuits, displays, sensors, solar cells, and electro-optic devices. Describing scientific fundamentals and recent breakthroughs such as the first “invisible” transistor, Transparent Electronics: From Synthesis to Applications brings together world renowned experts from both academia, national laboratories, and industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensors, matrices, symmetry, and structure-property relationships form the main subjects of the book. While tensors and matrices provide the mathematical framework for understanding anistropy, on which the physical and chemical properties of crystals and textured materials often depend, atomistic arguments are also needed to qualify the property coefficients in various directions. The atomistic arguments are partly based on symmetry and party on the basic physics and chemistry of materials.

This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first text to cover all aspects of solution processed functional oxide thin-films. Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) comprises all solution based thin- film deposition techniques, which involve chemical reactions of precursors during the formation of the oxide films, i. e. sol-gel type routes, metallo-organic decomposition routes, hybrid routes, etc. While the development of sol-gel type processes for optical coatings on glass by silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide dates from the mid-20th century, the first CSD derived electronic oxide thin films, such as lead zirconate titanate, were prepared in the 1980’s. Since then CSD has emerged as a highly flexible and cost-effective technique for the fabrication of a very wide variety of functional oxide thin films. Application areas include, for example, integrated dielectric capacitors, ferroelectric random access memories, pyroelectric infrared detectors, piezoelectric micro-electromechanical systems, antireflective coatings, optical filters, conducting-, transparent conducting-, and superconducting layers, luminescent coatings, gas sensors, thin film solid-oxide fuel cells, and photoelectrocatalytic solar cells. In the appendix detailed “cooking recipes” for selected material systems are offered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the November 7-9, 1977 Conference on PROCESSING OF CRYSTALLINE CERAMICS, held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. It was the Fourteenth in a series of "University Conferences on Ceramic Science" initiated in 1964 and still coordinated by a founding group of four ceramic related institutions, of which North Carolina State University is a charter member, along with the University of California at Berkeley, Notre Dame University, and the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In addition, two other ceramic-oriented schools, the University of Florida and Case-Western Reserve University, have also hosted Conferences in the series. These research-oriented conferences, each uniquely concerned with a timely ceramic theme, have been well attended by audiences which typically were both inter national and interdisciplinary in character; their published Proceedings have been well received and are frequently cited. This three day conference was concerned with (a) scientific aspects of all process steps which must be combined and controlled effectively and sequentially in producing crystalline ceramics (both oxides and nonoxides), and (b) utilization of these principles in developing processes for several classes of advanced ceramics critical to present and future technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant advances have occurred in the theory of non-stoichiometry problems and fundamentally new and wide-ranging applications have been developed, helping to better identify relevant issues. The contributions in this volume bring together the experience of specialists from different disciplines (materials scientists, physicists, chemists and device people) confronted with non-stoichiometry problems. The 40 papers, including 9 invited papers, give an advanced scenario of this wide interdisciplinary area, which is highly important in its diverse aspects of theory, implementation and applications. This work will be of interest not only to universities and laboratories engaged in studies and research in this field, but also to organizations and industrial centres concerned with implementations and applications. The diversity of the topics, as well as the extraordinary tempo in which Non-stoichiometry in Semiconductors has progressed in recent years attest to the permanent vitality of this field of research and development.
